Article: Georgia lawmakers want "In God We Trust" on car tags - Atlanta Business Chronicle

One of the reasons why living in the Bible-belt sucks. Georgia has many more issues to be worried about than appeasing the religious folks out there.

So they want 'In God We Trust' standard, while making it a fee to have the county label? Not sure how many times I'll get pulled over by police, but I will refuse to display that motto, and will NOT PAY for a county tag. I think I'll place my own motto over the default one, or simply put a black sticker over it.

Perhaps the next wildlife tags will be immune to this nonsense? :/

This is exactly what I will do. I will block it out with a colored tape that makes it obvious I am intentionally blocking the silly and incorrect motto.

Well, for what it's worth, here in Florida we get a choice. Sunshine State, county name, or "In God We trust". Based upon my observations, the latter is exceedingly rarely selected, perhaps 1 in 10,though I'll concede that's a mental calculation and I haven't actually counted and documented.

I think Georgia would be quite different. Right now "In God We Trust" is optional ($1 more i think), and I see it more often than I think I should. And I'm guessing it depends on the location in Florida where you reside...I would guess South Florida would be a little more rare to see that motto.

Tampa, for what it's worth. Most people choose "Sunshine State", just estimating I'd say 70-80%. That motto adorns both my transportation devices.

Here we go again. Another case of the religious trying to push their religious beliefs down everyone's throats. I'm not sure what part of the US Constitution is unclear to these people, and even if you can successfully argue that it's allowed, as somehow has been done for money....why is it necessary?

This is the part of living in the south that I find pretty distasteful. Not that you never find this kind of crap in other places, but it's predominantly found in the bible belt, where people can't help but wear their religion on their sleeves and shove it down your throat for good measure. I too would cover it up or place something else over it. Let them give me a ticket...I'd just love to be the test case.

I like the county name, but I also like having "IN GOD WE TRUST".

Why would anyone not want to trust in God?

GASP....Because I don't believe in God. I know that must be tough for some to understand. There are also many who believe in other gods....again....I know that's difficult for many of the "god fearing" folks of Georgia to understand. That's why gov't should just stay out of the God business.

Worship as you please....as a private matter.

I especially like the "founding principles" angle used to advance the proposal.

The Economist recently put out an in-depth article about the idea. The cliffs of it are that the whole idea of the Founders crafting America as a Christian nation is pretty much nonsense.

Religion in America: The faith (and doubts) of our fathers | The Economist

My favorite part of the article is the alternate version of the gospels written by Thomas Jefferson:

Quote:
Jefferson’s approach to redacting the Bible involved something more radical than translation. He literally snipped out everything supernatural: miracles, the Virgin birth, the resurrection. The result was his own, non-mystical account of the life of Jesus. He told his old comrade: “I too have made a wee little book from the same materials which I call the ‘Philosophy of Jesus.’ It is a paradigma [sic] of his doctrines, made by cutting the pages out of the book and arranging them on the pages of a blank book…A more beautiful or precious morsel…I have never seen. It is a document in proof that I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus, very different from the Platonists who call me infidel and themselves Christians.”
Ironically, I am actually rather open to that sort of approach to Christianity, although I think the "In God We Trust" license-plate crowd would find it pretty reprehensible.

Here is a test for all the folks out there who think this is a good idea and can't understand the opposition:

Put yourself in this scenario. You're living in Saudi Arabia or another Muslim country. You are forced to put a plate on your car that says "Allah is Great" or "Islam is the truth" or some other saying like it. Are you OK with that? Would you feel uncomfortable?
