We are moving to the Buford area from Wisconsin next month. Up here, there are lots of county and public courses.
What is the story in the Northern Atlanta area? It seems like most of the courses I am finding are country clubs and private courses. What is the best way to play golf in ATL without joining a club? We are middle class, and are not looking to pay hundreds of dollars per round, or join a club with a crazy entrance fee.
the city of Atlanta offers several very excellent public courses as does Cobb County and the city of Marietta. I used to play but marriage kind of killed my golf game.
My husband used to use GolfNow.com all the time to get a tee time to golf at the MANY public courses in Northern Atlanta. He used to play the one at Lake Lanier a lot. Check it out.
There are a ton of choices near Buford. i don't play up that way often but a quick Google search yields:
[LEFT]Lanier Golf Club
The Legacy course at the Lanier Golf Club opened in 2009 and features some of the most scenic holes in Buford. With multiple fairways running alongside Lake Lanier, Legacy is an attractive option for players in the area.
PineIsle Golf Course
With similar features to Legacy, PineIsle Golf Course offers a scenic 18-hole course with frequent views of Lake Lanier. Designed by former PGA Tour great Gary Player, PineIsle offers the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop to this 6,514-yard course. A workout facility and swimming pool make this club an option for non-golfers as well. Sugar Hill Golf Club
Located in Sugar Hill, Buford's neighbor to the west, the Sugar Hill Golf Club is another public golf option in the area. Opened in 1992, Sugar Hill is spread out through the foothills of the North Georgia mountains. The 6,522-yard course has 10 holes with water hazards, including the 12th hole with an island green. Collins Hill Golf Club
About 15 miles south in Lawrenceville is Collins Hill Golf Club. With affordable rates starting at about $25, Collins Hill is a viable choice for Buford golfers. The par-71 course offers many changing elevations to challenge players. In addition, Collins Hill, which opened in 1988, provides membership opportunities that include benefits and greens-fee reductions. Apalachee Golf Course
Located in nearby Dacula, the Trophy Club of Apalachee runs along the Apalachee River. The 6,620-yard course opened in 1994 and features a manageable back nine with three par-3's. The Trophy Club is also attractive for golfers in need of practice as the club includes a double-tiered driving range and a chipping area with a bunker.
There are many publice choices in the surrounding area, you may want to check out St. Marlo, Bear's Best, Trophy Club, River Pines.

Some courses have GolfNow type reservations on their own website as well. For instance, I play Stone Mountain many Fridays of the summer for like $25 booking directly on their site.
