The Center of Atlanta is different for different people, for me its Woodruff Park, which ive always viewed as a town square.

I think Centennial Park as usurped Woodruff Park in just about everything. Woodruff just isn't the "people's park" like Centennial Park is.

That's a pretty optimistic way of describing the result of someone vomiting strip malls all over the region in the 20th century.

Atlanta has many centers, it just depends on where you are coming from. I would say Midtown is the center simply because that's where most of the action is. You don't go downtown because nothing is there but hotels and businesses. Midtown incorporates a large area with a bunch of really good restaurants and bars. Ponce de Leon is to me the center of the city. From there you can find anything you are looking for.

downtown is still the center of the city, but it needs more life. i was down in fairlie-poplar tonight at 'slice' and while there was some stuff going on, it was mostly quiet. i didn't see any homeless people around the area which makes me question other peoples' experiences in the fairlie-poplar area as i've never had any problems with anyone harassing me over there.

the number one thing that downtown needs more of is street-level retail. there are simply too many buildings that have no street presence and there's so many parking garages it's ridiculous. modify the first stories of most of the buildings down there as restaurants and shops, maintain the streets and trees, and you'll see a huge resurgence in downtown. already the northern part of downtown has seen a lot of that, but i'm afraid it's going to hit a plateau if they don't modify buildings like americasmart and the westin which are basically fortresses standing in the way of downtown's development.

Maybe you meant euphemistic?

Oh, they're there alright.

Sort of a "chicken-and-egg" problem. The area needs foot traffic and it's not that inviting of an area, especially at night. I can see the potential, but it looks dirty.

Geographically, I tend to think the center of Atlanta is north downtown/south midtown...roughly near the Bank of America building or the Fox Theatre.

Historically it was definitely Five Points.

Tourists probably think of Centennial Olympic Park as the center of town b/c that is where lots of attractions are clustered.
