So gay white men are having sex with straight black women and spreading HIV? I don't think so.

The highest percentage of HIV-infected people are gay black males.

You can't spread diseases by overdosing with prescription pills. That's more of a mental health phenomenon. This is a public health issue.

Yep, it's black bisexual men that are causing this issue, more so than these women's shooting up. Magazine articles in Time or Newsweek mention this social health problem at least annually.

Everyone has HIV because they chose to not wear a condom or share needles. Doesn't matter your age, race, orientation, whatever. HIV doesn't like certain people more than others.

I agree. Since working downtown I have come across a couple of black males - very feminate and corporate - and claimed to have dated women.

Strictly vaginal sex no. Anal sex is a greater risk. Again, it is the specific action one takes, not their race/orientation/gender.

I agree. I spoke to several doctor's and it is very difficult (though not impossible) to get HIV via vaginal sex unless the male already has some sort of cut or lesion.

They've been talking about this for at least 10-15 years. Isn't part of the argument that women are exposed because there is so much negative stigma associated with high risk behavior?

1. The reason this is an issue is because of the very very very very long latent period between getting infected with HIV and exhibiting symptoms. As a result, an infected person could infect thousands, potentially (like if they're a sex worker or "down low"), before they find out they're sick. Most people, once they find out they have the virus, will choose a safer course of action.

2. There ARE drugs to aid in prevention of HIV. It's called antiretroviral therapy, or ARVs or ART. These are the drug regimens that people with HIV take to keep their viral load (the number of copies of the virus) down. If viral load is low then they reduce the chance they infect other people.

If someone is HIV+ and they have an HIV- sexual partner, if the HIV- partner starts taking ART it reduces their chance of getting infected down to nearly 0.

HIV and drug addiction cannot be equated. They are seriously different things.

One is an infectious disease and the other is an addiction.

BTW - don't think that because you're straight and white that you're safe.

As you can tell by now I work in HIV. And I can tell you that you'Re NOT safe. Always, always be cautious.
