Atlanta airs smoking ban for public parks and more (Roswell: condo, to move)

Dist. 6 City Councilman Alex Wan, who now represents a section of southeast Buckhead after the recent redistricting, and Councilwoman Joyce Sheperd are co-sponsoring legislation that would prohibit puffing on cigarettes, cigars or pipes in “city parks, athletic fields, aquatic areas, golf courses, tennis courses, hiking/walking/biking trails, playgrounds, off-leash areas, and spectator and concession areas.”

Shepherd chairs the council's Community Development and Human Resources Committee and it will discuss the legislation at its next meeting on Tuesday.

The proposed ban in Atlanta would follow similar moves by Alpharetta, Roswell, Duluth and Clayton County, among other local jurisdictions.

Sounds like an idea whose time has come.

Well I'm not a smoker but I think this is dumb. If you are outside you can move away from someone smoking if you don't like it. The government telling you what you can put in your body is not a good solution imo.

Indoor bans are another story and a good idea.

I say compromise and have dedicated smoking areas away from child-oriented areas. (Splash Pads, Pools, Playgrounds,ect..)

I don't understand why anyone smokes anymore. It has got to be one of the most expensive, inconvient habits to have; plus it smells bad, unhealthy and bad for your skin. I wish people could not smoke in condo buildings, sometimes I get cigarette smoke drifting into my unit.

I am not a smoker and also disagree with banning smoking outside. If it bothers you walk away or ask the smoker to move downwind. I can see it being a problem at large, crowded events.

If it works for Alpharetta, Roswell, Duluth and Clayton County it ought to be good enough for the city of Atlanta. There's no reason to be smoking on public property.

Or maybe THEY can move away from us? Afterall, we aren't doing anything that impedes on them or risks their health? Just make them keep a 50 foot buffer from non smokers?

What about fat people? I don't like their nasty habits either. They tend to smell and are sweaty heaps of nastiness in the summer. Keep them 50 feet away from me too.

someone being fat isn't causing direct harm to you, as though someone smoking a cancer stick is...

Gee, I hope nobody here has a kid or spouse who is overweight. I've never noticed them sweating more or smelling different or being nastier than anyone else.
