For a London expat that wants to live in America and experience the least culture shock, I would recommend Seattle. The climate is similar, the culture and architecture is also similar, it has good fish-n-chips, a Starbucks around every corner, and lots of British style pubs. The only difference is the scenery on a good day, Seattle has beautiful mountains and Puget Sound, while London has some hills and the Thames.

And since you mentioned "Pubs", you won't find the same here in the Atlanta area. Everything here is a restaurant with the occasional integrated bar within the restaurant. I think it's due to a law that requires at least 50% food sales, but I'm not certain. Hell, we were just recently granted the right to buy beer here on Sundays so "Pubs" are probably a long way off.
Not sure about San Fran, but in Chicago you can find a local Pub/Bar on just about every street corner.

Oh please. There's just as many pubs in atlanta as there are in other cities.
(Which isn't many, I'll admit but that's because that's just not our thing in 'murrica)

I was just getting ready to post some links to the pubs I know of in Atlanta...having lived in London for a time I can say that they aren't so different - just prettier people here.

Yeah, but they got werewolves over there or so I hear.

What's your take on "Pubs" in London vs. Atlanta?

Really? I think the closest "European" American city is Boston.

I haven't seen anything here yet that is similar to Britain's pub life. Anything done here feels fake. Maybe in the American old cities they have that sort of culture.

Well, I lived there...it's different than just experiencing it. I've loved visiting, but did not love living there. You get an entirely different feel for it after you stay for a year or two.

My intention was not to disparage London, but to point out that it's not miles above Atlanta in every single category - as some people would have you believe.

I only know the gay nightlife, and it wasn't nearly as lively and fun as Atlanta's. Again, that's just my opinion.
