Old Fourth Ward, you're getting a... self-storage facility? | Atlanta News & Opinion Blog | Fresh Loaf | Creative Loafing Atlanta

This is NOT the type of intown development I want to see. This is within walking distance to the King Memorial MARTA station!! There are already some nice condo/apts behind the site and even some on the other side of the tracks. That whole strip of Dekalb needs to be redeveloped into condo/apts!

Wonder why they are putting the parking lots out front instead of behind the retail buildings. Isn't that the opposite of what the SS master plan requires?

Of course they're trying to do the same thing down at Glenwood.

well this is at roswell and wieuca and I think there is a difference in how strict their planning guidelines are between all sites and the LCI town site plan further north.

Do you see the pattern here?

You know what takes a city to another level? World-class transit. Technological centers. Infusion of capital to rebuild poor, decrepit neighborhoods and provide jobs. Great institutions of learning (it has this with Georgia Tech and up and coming Georgia State, but specialty schools are needed too). You think the people who live in Oakland Park or the West End are going to benefit from an outlet mall in Woodstock or a new Ponce Market?
Do you think the people in The Bronx stay in just the Bronx? Do those people in Roxbury benefit from a mall in Cambridge?
NorthYards and King of Prussia in Philly: How will the poorer neighborhoods in North Philly and West Philly benefit from those places?
What about jobs for those residents in the D.C. neighborhoods near Howard University or Anacostia? How do they benefit?
Specialty schools?:Morehouse, Spelman, CAU,The International Theological Seminary

Yes, a College Football Hall of Fame gives an attraction for tourists, as does perhaps this new Porsche test track. But otherwise, Atlanta is still an overgrown suburb with LA-style traffic and a metro population that 90% resides outside city limits. Those things are not going to change that persona or the attitude of people in the metro counties. Without Cobb and Gwinnett willing to chip in to fund expansion of transit, Atlanta is doomed to keep the 'LA of the East' label.
Whether its 90% 0r 75%, most cities in the U.S. are made like this. The fact that the city of Atlanta is growing faster than its suburbs for the first time in decades is proof that the city has been moving in the right direction.

By the way - the trend is for Atlanta itself to shrink in area, not increase. Look at the cities breaking off recently - Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, Dunwoody. That trend will continue if MARTA continues to be mismanaged and tax dollars are not allocated properly, with even perhaps N Fulton (Alpharetta, Roswell, Sandy Springs) breaking off into its own county a strong possibility.
Those areas were never apart of Atlanta. They did not "break off" from Atlanta.
And just about every major public transit agency in most American cities are mismanaged at some level.

York City MTA:

The agency lacks "any demonstrated desire" to improve itself, and displays a "horde" mentality that encourages time-wasting and expensive turf fights

Lets not even get stared on SEPTA in Philadelphia.
MARTA in comparson stacks up well in comparison to the way it is ran considering its constraints by the lack of state funding.

One thing to have constructive criticism, but you just sound cynical.
