It's great to hear that Atlanta is growing and businesses are moving here. There are also lots of great companies here, yet it seems the job market still is not good. More often than not on these forums it seems the people getting the great jobs here are transfers or relocations.

It also seems that for all the companies moving here and the companies already here hire people from out of state mostly. I would like to see what with all the businesses moving here what percentage of people they are putting into these jobs are locals versus transfers.

I notice that Georgia residents have trouble getting work while non-residents get hired with no problem. I heard a report on the local news a couple of weeks ago that the unemployment situation in Atlanta still is not good so I am trying to understand where the jobs are with all these huge companies here and more businesses keep moving here.

I can't disagree with you, Atlanta_BD. I would like to, but cannot find a good counter-argument.

Some sectors of specific industries are still very tight, while others seem to be doing more hiring. IT/computer and transportation-type jobs seemed to have picked up in the Atlanta area, while construction and education are still slow in hiring.

The unemployment rate is still rachet here because people keep moving here with no job which you can see by the post on this site. It's going to stay rachet till people start going to Texas where jobs actually exist outside IT and Healthcare.

Gonna rep you just because you used the word ratchet in a sentence regarding unemployment.

It was much easier to get a a job when I moved here in the late 90's. Once that first recession hit in 2000 along with the dot.com bubble bursting, jobs had become harder to get. The last recession made getting a job impossible even though supposedly new job are being added and more business is coming here.

My theory is that because once Atlanta starting growing after the Olympics and folks were coming here and getting jobs, and this city has a strong history of nepotism, the hiring powers saw this last recession as an opportunity to shut people out and make it impossible for "just anybody" to get job even more difficult. Your thoughts?
