That's because a Yankee is an American. It was only when the rebels in the south no longer considered themselves as Americans that they used it as a pejorative. Later on, the highly educated people wearing sheets on their heads used it in the same way and it became a synonym for someone from the north.

Born and raised in Michigan...moved here Dec 2010. Here's my score: 40% Dixie. You are definitely a Yankee.

Where I live "yankee" has a negative connotation.

Both yankee and rebel have negative connotations where I live. Seems like it might be time to put that crap behind us after 150 years.

I'm a southerner with roots going back to the early 1800s and I have ancestors who fought in the civil war. But being called a "rebel" is offensive to me.

I'm loling because I am born and bred Atlanta native. I do however have Yankee parents, so that might have something do with it....

I don't understand the fascination with that one either. Many years ago I remember hearing some very country folks refer to all drinks as Coke, but I haven't heard it again since then. It's not a common way to refer to soft drinks anywhere. How can you ever have a Mountain Dew if you call it a Coke?

I got 61%, but the strange thing is that only 2 of my answers were totally southern. It doesn't make sense...

So southerners didn't use the term prior to secession? I was pretty sure they did...

Same here...I'm a southerner but not a rebel. Well, I've done some rebellious things in my time but I've never seceded from the U.S.
