All people do in Atlanta is tear down history. If this occurred in NYC or SF or even London, people would be furious. Keep the little history we have intact. We're turning into a soulless city with no historic structures. If we're not going to be a super dense city, at least be a city with soul like Savannah or Charleston.

Hurt Building
Candler Building
C&S Building
Healey Building
Georgia Tech Campus
Atlanta University Campus
Rich's Building
Davison's Building
Muse Building
Academy of Medicine
Crum & Forster Building
Fort McPherson
Flatiron Building
Fox Theatre
Georgian Terrace Hotel
Ponce Condominiums
Palmer House
Reid House
First Church of Christ, Scientist
The Temple

These are examples of historic buildings just in the urban core that have been preserved. As we speak there are others that are being restored and repurposed (Ponce City Market, Clermont Hotel, Wrecking Bar). It is highly inaccurate to say that all Atlantans do is tear down history, just as it is to say that Atlanta is the only city that engages in teardown activity. Having lived in DC and in NYC, I can assure you that is not so.

I think that this is what give Atlanta its unique soul. It is a mix of old and new. It has a long history, but also plenty of new character as well. We have some of the new style of building from Dubai and Asian cities that have boomed along with keeping our historic ties. Very fitting architecture for the capital of the "New South".

The structure is not historic, but the congregation itself is.

How is a 132 year old building belonging to a 151 year old church not historic?

That building is not 132 years old. Where did you get that info?

But a visit to Friendship revealed a church with more modest intentions. The current 132-year-old structure sits on little more than three acres of land. Inside, Hawk escorted me to a small library near the main office with round tables, chairs, and a few bookcases. He said the church was blindsided by the mayor going to the press when Friendship had yet to receive a formal offer letter from the city in writing.

Still, it's hard to overlook the historic riches of Friendship as Hawk gives me a tour. In the basement, he reminds me that two of the nation's premier black institutions, Spelman College and Morehouse College, respectively, were established and held early classes there. Old black-and-white photos show members congregating on the steps of the main entrance more than 100 years ago. Huge portraits show the church's first six pastors, including Rev. Dr. Maynard Jackson Sr., the father of Atlanta's first black mayor, and Rev. Dr. William Guy, the father of actress Jasmine Guy.

There is a lot of truth to that, but there is also a very strong spirit of preserving the history that is left, and there's a pretty good track record of success, even if those efforts were shamefully late to the game.

So while your general point is valid, your specific choice of words ("all people do in Atlanta is tear down history") is wildly off the mark.
