Based on this article, it seems that a large number of residents in this area prefer to have the "30339" zipcode versus "30080".

"Smyrna residents from around Log Cabin Drive to South Cobb Drive inside I-285 will get their new Vinings ZIP code next year.

Some residents in the affected neighborhoods said "community identity" is the main reason they requested the ZIP code change. Although ZIP codes were designed for mailing purpose, they are also being used to calculate home sales, crime statistics and insurance rates nowadays..."

of course they do, but the city should include that land as well as Cumberland. It's silly and really holds the city back.

Smyrna had the opportunity in the 80's (or was it the 70's). It was a missed opportunity that they fully acknowledged but not so easy to correct now.

Do you know what GA law is for cities to annex unincorporated land?

A majority of land owners in an unincorporated area have to approve an annexation. I know it is more complex than that, but if it comes to a referendum and the citizens in the effected area vote it down, the city cannot annex.

It is easier for a city to annex undeveloped property if the owner of the land wants in and the city wants it. Once the area is developed and you have multiple owners, it is not so easy to do so, the majority of the owners must want in.

You have the inverse as well, Decatur for example. Some surrounding neighborhoods have petitioned to come into the city limits but those in the city have been against it.

Varying reasons each time, Decatur residents didn't want to overburden their school system. In Smyrna, that reason wouldn't apply as Smyrna does not have a city system. In areas where the county government is seen as becoming less effective, you are seeing annexations and new cities being created, north Fulton and north and central DeKalb for example. You don't see this in Cobb and Gwinnett as much.

It really sounds like they want to be associated more with Buckhead and the City of Atlanta. Are they trying to get annexed to Atlanta? That's how this looks. This sounds like an identity crisis.

I have no problem with it. So they want the best of both worlds (don't we all), to be associated with the City of Smyrna and the services that has to offer and to be identified with the similar properties right next door to them and just by the fact they have a 30339 zip code and a more specific identify of Vinings, their property values are higher.

An identity crisis with a larger tax bill.

The areas converting the Vinings/Atlanta zip code are not with the City of Smyrna limits. They just have a Smyrna address.

The people in the area feel that they are more "Vinings" than "Smyrna."
