I don't have to do this at this point, but I was just curious if you had to drive from NYC to Atlanta, GA avoiding ALL Tolls, what route would you take? I know 3 possible routes to do this. I am curious what route would you take if you HAD to AVOID ALL TOLLS?

I will tell my route:

1. I-78 W over the holland tunnel (no toll going west)
2. Pick Up I-287 S from I-78 around Morristown, NJ area
3. Take U.S 202/206 S
4. Take I-95 S around Lawrenceville Area (through Philadelphia)
5. When entering Delaware take I-495 S to bypass Wilmington
6. Take DL-1 S through Delaware
7. Before DL-1 becomes a toll road, take exit 148, and then take back roads for 0.5 mile
8. Pick Up U.S. 301 S somewhere around Delaware
9. Take that over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
10. Continue on U.S 50 W towards D.C
11. Stay on U.S 50 W until it ends at Baltimore Washington Pkwy
12. Take BW Pkwy S
14. Take I-695 over the Anacostia River and then I-395 though D.C
15. Continue on I-95 S through VA
16. Take I-85 S around Petersburg Area and follow I-85 until Atlanta, GA

Here is a link to my route on a map: http://url2it.com/kttlh

So whats your toll free route you would take?

2. I78W to US22 in Phillipsburg NJ, Take that, get off before the Toll Bridge, Go over the "Free" bridge Between Phillpsburg NJ & Easton PA
3. Get back on US22 to I78
4. I78 -> I81 -> i77 -> i85 -> Atlanta

I've driven from New York City to Atlanta several times. The first time I didn't know any better so I just took 95 the whole way down to North Carolina, which was dumb.

Now I take I-78 into Pennsylvania where I pick up I-81 all the way down to (I believe) Tennessee, then some other Interstate that I don't remember for about 100 miles, then I-85 right to Atlanta.

I think I-78 has a $1 toll on it somewhere, so this doesn't technically fit your criteria, but it's the best way to go. This route is very rural and you pass through no major towns.

I have driven this route before and to tell you the truth I would prefer I-95 to NC. I didn't like I-81 at all, just bear with no restaurants and lodging on the way and a pretty sparse interstate in some parts.

Thanks for the tip; I didn't know one could do that.

That's the exact same reason I prefer 85/95.

I drove up to Connecticut for Christmas, and had heard that the GWB into Manhattan was up to $13. Going up to the Tappan Zee Bridge [only $5; what a bargain!] became part of my route, even if it did add ~30 minutes [the snow squalls on the Merritt Pkwy would add another hour].

There are plenty of restaurants and hotels along I-81, you just have to exit. I much prefer Flyonpa's recommended route. It isn't as stressful a drive as I-95 can be.

I-81 to Virginia, I-77 to Charlotte, I-85 to Atlanta.
