I haven't paid any attention to this thread, but man, what a great review of Atlanta. OP is insightful and well thought out.

One of the best observations I have read about our fine city.

With that said, I kind of wish we could ban the words Texas, Dallas, or Houston from the Atlanta forum. Kinda. If everyone could talk like OP, then no problem. But it sucks being saddled with the constant comparisons.

I lived in Pittsburgh. I like it, and I'm a fan of industrial cities, but in my opinion (just mine), Atlanta is just as pretty and it has the advantage of not being as run down as many parts of Pittsburgh.
They are sprucing the city back up by renovation. What they've done in addition to the natural beauty makes Pittsburgh pretty remarkable. Atlanta's best natural features are miles away from its city center so no, I think Pittsburgh is prettier.

Austin looks nice, but it's so hyped I'm sick of hearing about it.
So check it out in person. I was really impressed. As a state capital, Atlanta should emulate what they've done there. Austin lives up to the hype.

So, if everyone lauds Atlanta...then it's no problem.

One thing I like about Austin is the boulevard that leads to the state capital. I love cities that are laid out that way for some reason. Atlanta's state capital layout is awful.

Unfortunately, Atlanta cannot emulate the river that runs through Austin so that's out of the picture. Other then that, Austin's pretty overrated outside of downtown and the UT campus area...and just like the other Texas cities and Atlanta, it sprawls...a lot. It really lacks classic urban neighborhoods.

Austin has the better downtown. Atlanta has the better neighborhoods.

Atlanta has trees everywhere.Dogwoods,Azaeleas,Magnolia trees add to the green with burst of color.
Anyone who has driven through residential Buckhead ,Inman,Candler,Grant Park,Cascades, and Druid Hills would not make such an absurd statement.

I think its the other way around.Austin could use better transit, and be more diverse.

Only a blind person can say they don't see any green in the Dallas metro.
I agree. That I've seen there isn't any place in the nation east of the 35 interstate that I would describe is brown.

I don't think that's what he is saying. He is saying that appears people don't have a problem with people from other places in their discussions as long as they are praising Atlanta. If they are offering criticism however, even honest criticism, then their presence is unwelcome.

Maybe so but it did not come across that way to me.

If you have been around the forum long enough, you would see that Atlanta is CONSTANTLY compared to Houston or Dallas. I spent two months in Dallas and almost two years in Houston. They are not very similar at all to Atlanta, well, Dallas is much closer than Houston. There are some very basic similarities, but the constant comparison is tiring.

Anytime Houston, Dallas, or Texas comes up, it turns into subjective city v city crap. I have been guilty of it. But it doesn't really serve much of a purpose in the Atlanta forum. Go to city v city for that.
