Never knew the homes there were cheap.

Yep, they used to have rallies there.

I'm just making the point that Stone Mountain wasn't a Civil War site. All that despicable KKK crap came 50 years after the War.

The crime maps tell a really different story then this thread, I'm also interested in hearing thoughts from anyone who actually lives in stone mountain?

Maybe I'm reading the map wrong, but it looks like Decatur has more crime then stone mountain.

I once lived in Pepperwood Trail just blocks from the Police station.
Back in the 80's - it was a new sub division. Because of my divorce, I sold the house that was on a cul-de-sac and made 40k on it just 10 years in... those were the days.

We lived there about 10 years ago in tha Abingdon Estates subdivision, just two bloscks from Memorail Dr-where the Tupac Shakur Cultural center was (is?). Had virtually no troubles there--a couple of blocks over there was a home invasion. Our neighbors were about as friendly as anywhere--but there was not enough participation with the neighborhood swim/tennis to keep it open. Most everyone that moved in when we lived there were south Asian, African American or Vietnamese. The whites that lived there had been ther for 20-40+ years, but whites did move into the nearby new (at the time) construction. Other than folks asking/scamming for money when shopping--no problems. We had a dog, which made me feel safer. Sam's club and Kroger on Mountain Industrial for shopping--Sam's felt safer. I think the Publix closed. I would just avoid buying too close to apartments. Also, some homes were abandoned, not maintained during the crash--you should check for poor repairs and superficial maintenance on any home you buy. The schools are poorly rated, and Memorial Drive has lost more businesses than it has gained. For me the only significant negative was the schools.

Hi, We are looking t move to the area and our realtor told us that we should look outside of SM. I am wondering how things are there now...from people who live there. Any places we should avoid? Any great neighborhoods to look in?

Once again, Stone Mountain is being compared to an area of south DeKalb County that happens to have a Decatur mailing address but nothing to do whatsoever with the city of Decatur itself.

*sigh*

My questions are: What is it that you like about Stone Mountain more than other areas? Is the quality of the schools important to you? What is your budget? Where is your job located?

What is your price point, do you plan on using the public schools? Any other preferences—age of home, size of lot, size of home. The Gwinnett part of Stone Mountain will probably have higher rated schools than the Dekalb part. Generally speaking, I would avoid buying anything too close to apartments or a major road (Memorial Dr., Harrison Rd., etc.)—minimize non-residents wondering through your neighborhood. Read my other post above.

Yep. Cityhood would actually make this less confusing lol.

Recent OP: Decatur is a small city with defined boundaries and a fairly low crime rate. Schools are top notch and violent crime is rare. It's also one of the most expensive cities to purchase real estate in the metro, both home costs and property tax.

The area that's less safe than Stone Mountain is "Decatur" emphasis on the airquotes. It's an unincorporated area of DeKalb county that uses the name Decatur for mail since it does not have an actual city name. It's one of the less desirable areas and has pretty high crime, especially violent crime. Large numbers of homicides, carjackings, etc. It is definitely less safe than Stone Mountain. City of Decatur is safer.

One of the many confusing idiosyncrasies of Atlanta. Hope that helps.
