I just don't do it. So many of these folks don't look particularly poor or hard up.

so you would prefer it if they dressed in rags?

just because people have clothes does not mean they have enough to eat. it doesn't cost anywhere near as much to have a shirt on your back than it does to get a meal to eat. my family has struggled over the past year, and when you fall on hard times, you keep the clothes you already have and make do— but you can't do that with food.

I've lived in a third world country. I know what seriously dirty and worn out clothes look like. Maybe it is the wrong way to judge, but most panhandlers in the US have clothes that look cleaner and less worn out than folks in those countries who have homes.
