While I agree, the money of North Fulton will make sure the red line is built first.

Perception issues. In some parts of metro Atlanta, saying "MARTA" will bring out stronger, more hostile reactions than saying "f***", hence the four-letter word analogy.

They could help it with maintenance, refurbishment, and expansions. First and foremost, it needs to be ran correctly and efficiently. Priority number one is doing the best with what it is presently. If increased ridership leads to more money in the system, it will do no good if mismanaged. Still, adding rail to Alpharetta is in the best interest of the region, IMO.

MARTA, like so much of metropolitan Atlanta, has been largely a success IN SPITE OF Georgia's apathy. Long live MARTA.
What other southern city has heavy rail??

It's only 1 line with a spur to the airport. Hardly call it a system.

Both are needed and happily accepted.

I am not as informed of the east line expansion as you are. I only have noticed discussions regarding the potential north expansion. I have no real preference for which. I just want it to be as beneficial as it possibly can be.

It still counts as HRT.

I never said anything about another heavy rail in the south... I stated clearly that it was the ONLY heavy rail system in the south... Although, according to a poster below, I might be wrong.

Is Miami's a heavy rail? I am not as familiar with Miami and I was sort of under the impression it was a people mover type system. Is that heavy rail too?? I claim to be no expert on these designations...

UPDATE: It's not the only one. Miami also has heavy rail.

Miami has Metrorail (HRT), Metromover (the downtown people mover), and Tri-Rail (commuter rail).

It sure does look like heavy rail...

So Atlanta does NOT have the "only" system of heavy rail. It sure is the biggest though.
