I'd want no less than 2500 square feet for a family of four. Like others said, the layout affects the perception and utility of space. However, I don't know what we'd do without our basement and relatively abundant space on the two floors above that!

We will probably downsize later on, once the kids are gone.

Every family is different. I would suggest that you tour a few open houses that advertise 1500 sq ft so you get a feel for the size and make your decision based on that.
