Hi all,

In the few coming weeks I'll be making the move to Newnan and I just want to know a few things:

If anyone has made the trip from the state or around me, I'll be coming from Stamford, CT. I want to know how much the tolls will be. I'm guessing somewhere of 50 in total? Maybe that's too high. No clue what my budget on that.

How much money did you spend alone on the trip to get to your destination if you don't mind me asking?

Why is it whenever I apply to HVAC companies down in GA, even though I fit the bill in terms of qualifications/requirements they just don't seem to give me the time of day. Is it because I still have my CT address on my resume? Thoughts?

For anyone in the trade, which companies are looking for techs/installers? I preferably want to go commercial as I have a lot of interest in it but I wouldn't mind the residential side either. I just want the company to help me spread my wings.

Thanks

pmck, I am not understanding the tolls you mention. Are you meaning toll roads? The only tolls you would pay in any of the southern states would be on the express lanes of I-85 on the northeast side of Atlanta through Gwinnett County. There are free lanes as well. I assume you are talking about tolls getting around NYC and through New Jersey.

I would consider heading west out of CT staying north and west of NYC and Jersey and coming down I-81 through PA and VA into Knoxville, TN and then down 75 into Atlanta. MUCH less congested route than 95/85. You might bypass tolls altogether that way and avoid NYC, Jersey, DC, the Carolina cities.... hardly any major metro areas on the 81 route.

Yes. Unless you want the tourist city tour, when coming from New England to Atlanta, take I-84 to I-81 and then all the way down. Then in southern Virginia you can decide whether to continue on I-81 until I -75 then down to Atlanta, or take I-77 to Charlotte until I-85 and then on down to Atlanta.

From southern Virginia, both routes are roughly the same distance to Atlanta.

The only tolls are in New England and New York.

Yes, I wouldnt really give you the time of day if your resume said Ct. While I am not in Hvac, when I am hirng and looking at resumes there are too many applicants thinking of moving here, will be moving here in a few months etc....

I hear the less congested route has the more scenic route.

Based on multiple sites, I'm looking at around $120 bucks for gas. So the route you guys have suggested will make me pay zilch in tolls. Excellent. More money saved.

Now all I have to do now is look at places to stay for the night because that's one long drive. That'll probably be another $100 dollars or so. Then comes food time which will probably total about $50 to be safe.

@Ecu- that's painful to hear but unfortunately true. Yet how do some people get jobs lined up before they move to their new destination?

On road trips I typically aim for Best Westerns. A lot of them can run around 70. They can be hit or miss but I've found it's been a good middle ground between <50 buck roach motels and 100+ hotels. I went to college out in Texas which was a 15 hour drive. I always spent the night midway. makes it so much better than a whole day drive. Completely worth the money. I was just in Virginia last week. Spent the night in Harrisonburg right off 81. Very pretty area!

I stayed in Winchester on my drive from New England to Atlanta...July 2-3.

I can't guarantee it, but look around, you can find some decent places for that price. Especially in smaller towns.

As long as I'm able to stay just one night before completing my journey. Now it's just a matter of money.
