If an airport gets 100m passengers a year, the average month will be around 8.3 millon passengers. However, as months are not obviously even distributed(there are slower times) in passenger, you have to assume a month like December will get around 14 milion passengers because of the holidays and New Years. We're two thirds of the month into December and the busiest time of the month for flying is between December 23rd and December 31st. This means there's probably at least another 7-8 million passengers that will go through the airport between now and December 31st. If we already hit over 100 million passengers, we can assume final passenger numbers will be between 107m-110m which would be a record.

Hartsfield - Jackson International Airport is expected to break last year record of 101.5 million passengers. Over the holidays from December 23rd to January 5th it is expected that 4.2 million passengers will accommodate flights through HJIA.

There are ebbs and flows, but I don't think they are quite as drastically different. These numbers are also published.

One issue is limited capacity. During December, especially late December, ticket prices spike 2-4x higher from limited space. It deters some retirees, some business travel, people with flexible schedules, etc...

In other times of the year people are attracted by the lower rates and business travel spikes.

The airlines are trying to sell most their supply, just at far different prices. It is just a matter if demand is so low they cut back on supply and remove planes off the routes.

During most of 2015, including December, the month to month was between 8.2m and 9.4m.

The main outliers are January and February there are usually more slow downs where things drop to about 7m give or take a small amount. A great time to look for some travel deals, btw.

To date I think the busiest month Harstfield has had was in May with 9.4m passengers. December seems to stay right in the middle with 7.8-8.2m passengers each year.

We'll definitely surpass 100 mil this year.

It's truly amazing what a massive operation Hartsfield-Jackson is, and even more amazing how every day Atlantans are non the wiser how massive the number of people is that move through there every day.

My favorite recent experience highlighting this came from a flight I recently took to Wichita. Their airport has something like 12 gates total (about a third of the smallest terminal at HJIA) and (I swear to god) when you get off the plane you can see the see the TSA screening area immediately...and the baggage claim...and the single car lot.

Flying out there were probably 100 people there total. Upon arriving Atlanta though there were at least 3000 people in the terminal I landed in, followed by a Tokyo-style packed people mover train, in addition the mega stream of people waiting in the baggage claim/ticketing area.

Quite amazing to think that on any given day HJIA is the second most populated place in the State.
