The census bureau released their latest estimates today for city populations. According to the census, as of 1 July 2016 the population of Atlanta was 472,522, an increase of 52,519 since 2010. Percentage wise that was a 12.5% increase. I have a strong feeling Atlanta will surpass its 1970 peak population in 2020. Here's a link to where I got the information from.

That 2009 estimate of a 2000-2009 growth of around 126,000 was wildly out of sync with the reality as it turned out. This new estimate gives robust growth to the city & is hopefully more accurate.
Given that Atlanta's last huge annexation of land occurred in the 1950's, it's growth has not been propelled by the addition of huge amounts of land, a factor which has pushed city growth higher in states with much more liberal annexation laws such as North Carolina & Texas.
The population growth occurring in Atlanta is the result of infill development & neighborhood regeneration which marks a significant turnaround after the large population loss that Atlanta suffered during the 1970's & 1980's.

Seems like with a city our size it wouldn't be that difficult to go out and do an actual count. You might not get 100% perfect results but you could come close.

That would be called a "special census", Arjay.
Over the decades of my life I've seen it done a lot but seldom done by large cities.
In recent years special censuses have mostly been done by suburban locales or small towns that have reason to expect that a count conducted between the 10 year regular census would show an increase in in their population & thus qualify them for more state & or federal $$ to flow into their coffers.
It's possible that the rarity of large city special censuses is due to the high cost that conducting such a count would amount to for a large city.

Thanks, atler.

It would take some money but it doesn't seem like the cost would be overwhelming. (I'd guesstimate $1-2 million).

With previous annual estimates for Atlanta being off compared to the official Census numbers, I'll just wait for 2020.
