Wait a second, you guys are talking about a cafeteria, right?

I never went to an S&S. Is it not the same thing as like a Morrison's or Piccadilly?

whoa! that's cool. i've always wondered why they haven't tried an urban location (again). a lot of the "fast casual" places opening up in urban locations in atlanta are basically just cafeterias.

How did I grow up in Georgia and not know of this place? Is it related or a rename of the old S&W Cafeteria? I remember going there as a kid when we went on a shopping trip to downtown Rich's and Macy's and thinking the cubed jello layered with whipped cream in those tall parfait style glass dishes was the cat's meow.

The S&S and the S&W were separate but I think a lot of people confused them because the names were so similar.

The S&W was on Peachtree, next to Woolworth and across the street from Davison's (Macy's).

It was first rate, too.

I really enjoyed eating at S&S in Macon. and we even occasionally sojourned over to the one in Southwest Atlanta (Campbelton Plaza) where there was once also a Belk and later a Kessler's. I just ate at the Southwest Atlanta one a few weeks ago after church with my boys (who LOVE S&S) while my wife helped with a wedding shower at church. The place seemed to have a brisk business and I didn't notice any significant difference in food quality compared to their Macon locations. Oh those delicious casseroles (squash and broccoli) and those special little desserts. While not exactly a regular, I will genuinely miss this place.

Wow! Awesome pic. Does anyone remember the Chili Slaw dogs from Woolworth?

The open face roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes was good at the Woolworth's lunch counter on Broad Street Plaza behind the Five Points MARTA station. I had many a good meal there while I was a student at Georgia State University in the mid 1990's. Really inexpensive, too, great for a penniless college student! ;0)

it seems like there is such an income divide now, i think maybe that's what's affecting the existence of cafeterias. people used to eat together as a community and at least in atlanta that's not really the case anymore, you're either scraping by and getting fast food or you've got it set and you're eating organic, farm-to-table. there is something that's equalizing about a cafeteria.
