Thank you for your knowledgeable input, as always CMMom. I would add, for anyone who doubts that a 5 year old can be tested accurately, that the scores are consistent over time. That's been scientifically studied to be true--and personally my child took it at age 4 1/2 and again at age 10 (to refresh her psych ed for learning disabilities). Her scores were different by 1 point--within the margin of error. Of course, these scores don't tell everything but they are accurate for the skills that they do measure, even at pre-kindergarten age.

Here's some pretty good info with actual JATP questions.

One question told the test subjects that there was a table with many pages on it, and each page had a squiggly line. Their job was to do something with the squiggly line.

It seems pretty clear who the bright kids were.

This is not the test used for JATP. The Wechsler tests are used. Your link appears to pertain to non-cognitive skills that are measured at the school evaluation.

For whom? Each school is different. I think that some are fine with Average or above and some are looking for higher scores. And none would ever admit to a hard and fast "cutoff." They don't know what their applicant pool will look like each year. Wouldn't want to shoot themselves in the foot by specifying a number and having potential applicants be discouraged from applying.

Have you toured both schools? Also what grade are you considering? Our psych who administered the JATP for us said Westminster was VERY competive, and that was it. We are applying to Kindergarten/PreFirst at each. On our tour, not that a Westminster teacher wouldn’t have said given the chance, but one of the HI teachers said while with a reading group, “sometime if a child has the wiggles I send them out to run them off”. She said it very kindly and pointed to the door that opens to the playground. Westminster’s classrooms have a door that opens to the playground as well. It was funny and left an impression (obviously) on me. Speaking of playgrounds, we really like that the Woodward Primary School playground has a turfed soccer field for pickup games / play and it drains dry in 20 mins. The rest of the playground can be wet, while the field is dry for running.

An old thread, I know.. but how do these private schools compare to public schools like Walton (Cobb County), Northview High and Chattahoochee High (Fulton), and Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology in terms of culture and academic performance?
US News only has information for public schools.
