I have seen a couple of threads on here about private schools. How do Holy Innocents and Mount Vernon compare to Westminster?

They are really good schools, but not at Westminster’s level academically.

Yes, I would agree. I would classify them as "second tier" privates below Westminster et al. Both solid schools, but they are not nearly as selective as W (on the front end) or as academically rigorous.

So does Westminster sort out the tykes based on on how high they score on the entrance exam?

Some of our little ones didn't even learn to read until they were 6 or 7. I don't recall them knowing a lot of math either.

It's based on JATP scores (it's an IQ test, not an achievement test, so they're not testing reading or math skills), the child's performance at the school evaluation (which includes evaluation of both academic and social skills/behavior), and teacher recommendations/school records.

Legacy and siblings, yes, but that is not a guarantee of admission, especially when it comes to Westminster. They could fill an entire grade with legacies and siblings, but they want "new blood" too.

You are correct on this. My oldest graduated from W back in '12. My twins later applied. One was accepted and one was not accepted.

It measures a lot of different skills, but primarily verbal skills (ability to express knowledge using words) and visual-spatial/visual-perceptual skills. It's a blend of "what you know" and "how you think and problem solve." And you can't/shouldn't prep. Anyone offering prep services for JATP testing is shady at best.
