I second Amdro.

Learned that trick living in Texas in the 80s. Pour a little Amdro on the mound, gone in a few days.

Amdro works. And the fire ants here are nothing like they are in Texas. There are some, but not a lot.

I have a feeling the ones in SW Florida are “across the gulf” brethren of those in Texas. Mounds upon mounds upon mounds.

Didn't realize they were in Houston. Fortunately I avoided them.
I'm just glad we don't have bullet ants.

I’ve only seen a couple of fire ant mounds in my yard in the year that I’ve lived here. I just spray them, and they go away.

I wouldn’t recommend walking around barefoot in yards, but we're not in the practice of that anyways. It’s really not a huge problem.

Poison Ivy and spiders would be a bigger threat than fire ants to the bare foot.
