Mayor again? Kasim Reed talks City Hall corruption, crime, another run to lead Atlanta

In his first sit-down interview in three-and-a-half years, Reed answered questions from Channel 2′s Dave Huddleston about City Hall, the federal corruption case and talk that he wants to get back into politics.

He told Huddleston he still needs some time to sort it out, but in their 45-minute conversation, Huddleston said he got the sense it’s just a matter of time before Reed announces he’s running for mayor again..."

Default “Georgia Today”: Is Mayor Bottoms paying the price for a COVID crime wave?

In the continuing aftermath of Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ announcement that she will not be running for a second term in office, the Georgia Public Broadcasting “Georgia Today” podcast examines if Mayor Bottoms’ is paying the political cost for the ongoing spike in crime that she has referred to as a “COVID Crime Wave.”

Quote:
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms shocked many people in Atlanta and the nation by announcing last week she will not be running for reelection. She said that this is coming from a place of strength and not weakness. But her critics have said that what she calls a “COVID Crime Wave” and her handling of the firing of Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe, who shot Rayshard Brooks last summer, made her vulnerable if she had chosen to run. Police officers in the city of Atlanta feel like Bottoms no longer have their backs.

This week on Georgia Today, we look at some issues Bottoms faced during her tenure as mayor of the city of Atlanta with CNN national correspondent Ryan Young.

Yep.

Who's ready for Kasim 2.0? At this point I would be surprised if he doesn't run.

He'd have a real fight on his hands with Felicia Moore. She's been building her base of support for years and is well funded and experienced.

I wasn't clear, my comment wasn't necessarily meant as an endorsement but acknowledging the inevitable and that's him running and having a decent chance of winning if the field stays the same. As Arjay said Felicia Moore would be his toughest opponent. My thinking is why come out and make comments and do interviews if you're not going to run.

Was told there is possibly an article coming out in the next few weeks looking at Bottoms tenure as Mayor with some inside information from unnamed sources inside city hall that show a very distant, absent, and not interested Mayor who one reason for not running for re-election is and I am paraphrasing "doesn't want to be the Mayor if/when Buckhead splits from the city". That would be a stain on anyone's record and one the next Mayor might have to deal with.

I heard from multiple sources that KLB has been at least somewhat unhappy with the job almost from the beginning of her term because it is not what she might have expected it to be.

KLB is not a person that necessarily handles crisis the best and has been attempting to govern in an environment of an increasing number of growing crises, from the federal investigation into her predecessor’s tenure at Atlanta City Hall, the massive cyberattack on Atlanta city government and hostilities with the Trump administration early on in her mayoral administration, to the Rayshard Brooks police killing and the resulting bottoming out in morale in the Atlanta Police Department and the riots and massive crime spike in the city in 2020, to the growing Buckhead de-annexation drama this year.

Not to mention that the state is likely to make another even more serious attempt to takeover control of the Atlanta Airport, particularly if Buckhead successfully splits from Atlanta proper, and especially if Republicans retain full control of Georgia state government but manage to defeat Brian Kemp in the GOP primary with a more conservative candidate that is more popular with the increasingly powerful Trump wing of the party.

(There are reports that leading state airport takeover supporter, Georgia state Senator Burt Jones of Jackson is being encouraged by former President Donald Trump to run for either the open Lt. Governor’s office or challenge Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in the GOP primary in 2022. Jones was pictured with Trump at Trump’s South Florida Mar-a-Lago estate earlier this month. If Jones, who appears to be the leading proponent of a state takeover of the Atlanta Airport, runs for governor and wins the primary and the general election, expect Georgia state government to make a very serious and sustained attempt to takeover control of the Atlanta Airport from the City of Atlanta, especially if Buckhead successfully splits from Atlanta proper.)

KLB obviously wisely recognized that the City of Atlanta very seriously needs a mayor with the desire and the political skill set to handle the growing number of existential crises that have flared up under her watch.
