Where are all the bigger backyards of the northern suburbs? Is this a needle in the haystack? We’ve been looking in the Alpharetta/John’s creek area and are open to surrounding suburbs, but don’t want to go further north. Any insight is much appreciated.

There are plenty of places in those areas with land. Your real estate agent can search MLS using specific acreage minimums.

I'd suggest Milton.

Look in East Cobb and Roswell.

Depending on the neighborhood, I'd agree.

Except for Milton, it really comes down to age of the neighborhoods.

Alpharetta and Johns Creek are overall "newer" and more-recently developed than East Cobb and Roswell.

If you want go further in, but with similar amenities/attributes, you can also look into Dunwoody and Sandy Springs.

If you are willing to go east, but want similar amenities/attributes, look into the Parkview-Brookwood Area of Gwinnett County as well (South Lilburn, East Lilburn, North Snellville, North Stone Mountain, South Lawrenceville).

This is correct. Milton has minimum lot sizes (can't remember if it's 1, or 1.5 acres)

outside of that, you need to look at pre-1990 homes I'm guessing. We have a good sized back yard, and our neighborhood was build in the early to mid 80s in East Cobb

I live in South Forsyth & in my neighborhood a large private backyard commands a premium. People post on the facebook page for our community all the time for friends looking for homes with flat private backyards. They are available but beware they command a premium & are gone quick in this market.

If you are willing to look into Alpharetta and Johns Creek, then you might as well look at South Forsyth exits 12 and 13 area.
You get the best bang for your buck here while still being a stone's throw away from Alpharetta / Johns Creek Amenities.
