But Buckhead has low crime by City of Atlanta proper standards, with the Buckhead district (Atlanta Police Department, Zone 2) having the lowest crime rate in the City of Atlanta proper.

Buckhead (with some high-profile crime incidents since the start of the pandemic) having the lowest crime in the City of Atlanta proper raises the important point that what is considered to be a low incidence of crime in the City of Atlanta and ITP metro Atlanta likely may be considered a fairly high rate of crime in many outer-suburban and exurban communities.

ITP/City of Atlanta neighborhoods like Midtown and Virginia Highland are good areas to target if one is seeking an active Intown lifestyle. Lindbergh can be a good area to target if one wants and/or needs MARTA Heavy Rail Transit access to points north (Buckhead, Perimeter Center, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville) and/or points south (Midtown Atlanta, Downtown Atlanta, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport).

But the challenge with ITP/City of Atlanta proper neighborhoods like Midtown, Virginia Highland and Lindbergh is that while crime rates often may be lower in those areas than in other parts of the city, those areas unfortunately still experience a noticeable amount of crime as does the central part of any and every large major American city and metro area.

Since the start of the pandemic, crime has been occurring at a higher rate in the core areas of just about every major American city, including Atlanta.

If you do choose to live in the City of Atlanta proper or anywhere else inside of the I-285 Perimeter, the reality is that there is going to be an increased occurrence of some crime as there is in the core of any and every major American city and metro area. If you choose to live inside of I-285, you probably just simply are going to have to be comfortable living with the increased occurrence of some crime.

Unfortunately, along with the benefits of urban culture and amenities comes an increased occurrence of crime.

With that said, and keeping in mind that many (if not most) ITP communities will have an increased chance and occurrence of crime, ITP communities like Brookhaven, Chamblee, the City of Decatur proper, Vinings, Cumberland and Avondale Estates may be good areas to look in where the incidence of crime often may be relatively lower than in other parts of ITP metro Atlanta... But the reality is that there will be occurrences of crime in all of these areas and one will still need to be vigilant when out and about in a large major metropolitan area like Atlanta as they would need to be in any and every other large major metropolitan area.

If you may not feel comfortable living ITP where there may be an increased possibility of crime, many outlying OTP suburban areas may provide you a living environment where crime rates will be significantly lower and even dramatically lower than in many ITP areas.

Beyond that, there are numerous ITP metro Atlanta neighborhoods that offer a great, active and exciting urban living experience... But unfortunately, crime will (to varying degrees) be a factor in all of those areas.
You forgot to mention the gruesome Piedmont Park murder last summer. Someone on another thread shared it. It seems Midtown is having some issues.

I did not forget to mention it and I did repeatedly caution you that crime will be a factor after moving to live in Atlanta ITP.

I just knew that if one inquires about crime in Midtown or any Atlanta neighborhood, one is at some point going to be told about various crime incidents (everything from property crime up to violent crimes, including homicide) that recently have happened in those areas.

The Piedmont Park murder was indeed gruesome and disturbing, but fortunately those types of extreme incidents of violence don’t happen everyday.

But unfortunately, a noticeable amount of crime does happen in Atlanta like it does in all major U.S. cities, including in your current home city/metro of Chicago, which also has some notable challenges with crime like all major U.S. cities do, especially since the start of the pandemic.

It’s completely understandable if you don’t think that you will feel comfortable adjusting to living with the existence and threat of crime after moving to another major city/metro.

If that’s the case, then maybe staying in Chicago where you seem to feel much more comfortable living with that city’s very noticeable crime challenges might be the best option for the time being. Like they say, ‘sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know.’

Moving to an outlying suburban area OTP where the crime rates will be significantly lower might also be a good option if you still want to move to Atlanta but might would feel much more comfortable living in an area where the threat of crime will be much less of a factor.

Some bit of irony seems to be that, while you personally are thinking of moving from Chicago to Atlanta, some of Atlanta’s crime issues seem to have been imported from Chicago because of Atlanta’s status as a major hub of hip-hop music that is a major national destination for young rappers trying to become stars in the industry, including many aspiring young rappers from Chicago’s notoriously hard-edged and extremely violent drill rap music scene.
