Sheesh.
The poster did not state whether or NOT they were for or against anything? Or did I miss something?

Please leave it at that.

Once again "thank you". I truly wish contributors would READ the posting rather than READ SOMETHING INTO IT.

The poster remarked seeing a demonstration in the City of Atlanta that was unpleasant. He didn't say the group was for or against anything.

I have just read the whole thread in one sitting, I was going to suggest Buford. It is close enough to Gainesville, but has enough of a suburban, closer to Atlanta vibe in which you should feel comfortable. If you truly are someone that enjoys all types of people, you will enjoy people who might be more politically or culturally conservative than you and you will definitely find conservative people in the south.

I spent 15 years in Cobb County, am politically conservative, have a Southern Baptist background and would never, ever, treat you or your family with disrespect or force my views on you. I would enjoy talking with you about your multicultural experience. I visited Holland in the 80s and loved it. I remember hearing that while Amsterdam is one of the most liberal cities in Europe, the rest of The Netherlands is very conservative. Is that true?

You might want to look at Forsyth County. It is one of the fastest growing areas, very upscale developemnts, and just a short drive over Lake Lanier from Gainesville. It has a history of being bigoted, but that was twenty or thirty years ago and about 1/10th of its current population. All that growth has been from transplants from all over the country, so you should find a current population that is more diverse. Well, diverse as in people from different parts of the country and backgrounds, but not necessarily ecomomically diverse (it has developed on a rather upscale level). All in all I believe you will find any of these areas more conservative than southern California, but it is not like GA is full of the boys from Deliverance.

As to other posts, I agree with some of the points Scupper is trying to make. Being a native southerner, I have felt that people from other parts of the country love to paint us all as gun totin, over-all wearin, one toothed, cousin marryin eighth grade drop outs. You will find that Georgia has its share of "bubbas" but all in all it will be a delightful place to raise a family.

My two cents. All the best in your move, Yahoo....
I don't even know you and I like you! I hope the tenor of my post has not suggested to readers that I want to live in an area where people think like I do. This is not the case. I love to engage people in political discussions and have friends of all types and persuasions. What I cannot stand is blatant racism of any kind from any race and people who carry chips on their shoulders concerning race or their perception of racism.
It is all about respecting each others differences.

I also agree that many parts of the country paint the south as those "deliverance" types, but that happens to those of us in every state. I think oftentimes non- Californians peg us as socialist types, Hollywierd types, cosmetic surgery / fitness fanatics, etc when we are as diverse as the United States itself.

Anyway I like the tone of your post - you are a class act.

As a 19 year old born and raised in Atlanta I feel like this city is a great place to live. I recently went away to college in NY and I have found that many of the ppl that I have met at school have had the same reservations about the South as you do. My answer to you is that wherever you go in the nation there is going to be racism. I do not feel like people are more racist in the South. Also, most of the people who live in and around Atlanta are not real born and raised Southerners...they are "transplants" like yourself. Personally I grew up in a suburban area around ATL called Alpharetta-this is a great place to raise a family, by the way. To give you a picture of the cultural diversity here, I (a Chinese American) grew up with friends who were African American, Indian, White, Korean...you name it!

Hope this helps!

Default It's so annoying

How a thread can get completely off the subject!

You could probably read this entire thread faster if you didn't have to wade through the stuff that has NOTHING to do with the original QUESTION!

I share similar views to Yahoobaloo, so I am also troubled when considering relocating to Georgia for work. Can anyone on this thread recommend a suitable town within an hour west/south of Atlanta? If you had a choice btw: Peachtree City, Newnan or Carrollton, which would you pick? Thank you in advance.

I didn't catch what part of CA you are from, because they can make your views different as well. I know california and all of georgia so I should be able to help. If you are from one of the cities for example, l.a,san Diego, san fran, it will be a lot different except if you are going into Atlanta area which is like any other city. I have friends in Gainesville & it is very much farm land and scattered. It is near Athens which is full of UGA crowd mainly bars, hippies, and cute little restaurants. There is a mix ethnicity near campus not so much in the Gainesville school district. Mainly 50% African American & 50%Caucasians and that is it. As for the comments....4The South isn't what the northerns or westerns think. I have lived everywhere from New York, CA, to Atlanta. I believe you find the same worries everywhere. The main differences b/t ca and ga is the weather and traffic. We both drive everywhere but in gainsville you will have to drive an hour drive to atlanta to the nearest mall. Gainsville has all the food chains but nothing unique unless you go to athens. It can be kind of boring out there. As for weahter just b/c we are south does not mean we dont get cold. In the winter which usuallly starts at the end of nov. can get to 20-50 degrees all the way up in March. We don't really have fall and spring maybe for a couple of weeks. Then it gets HOTTTT. Like 100 degrees and no wind to cool you down. CA has great weather ...so that is my input good luck!
