That was slightly before my time in Atlanta, but I do remember in 1983 standing on Pleasant Hill Rd at the 76 truck stop that stood right at the exit from I-85 and looking down what was then a 2 lane road, at the start of construction of Gwinnett Place Mall. The surrounding area was nothing but pastures and other open space. There wasn't a car dealer or other building in sight.

Every time I went there as a kid, my dad would say "someday the guy who owns that dump is going to sell all his land and be a millionaire".
The lot he was commenting on is where the Expo Design Center & Best Buy shopping center now sits.
That was only 20 years ago. People have short memories, I guess.
Maybe we can talk the Chinese into buying Five Points. I'd much rather see a small "Chinatown" there than what's there now.
Do you think that Chinese like to live in Ghetto? Most Chinese live in Northeast Atlanta, Giwwnet or Duluth area. Land in downtown area is very expensive, more than "Chinatown" can afford. With Atlanta traffic condition, not many people like to travel to downtown by cars. IMO, the city should send more cops to Five Points and watch these crack heads and street peole and make them uncomfortable, then they will move to other places. Once the area is cleaned up, we can then talk about redevelopment. No one wants to throw money into Ghetto.
I was down in Five Points last summer, The Vortex looked like a cool place but some people in are group were not 21 so I never got a chance to go in. The had some cool tattoo shop. I did find it funny the big sign in some store window {insert number here} have been arrested for shop lifting this week, are you next? lol. lots for tweakers and crackhead everywhere. One dude in a parking lot stopped us and was ligh "I dropped a fat sack, I will split it with you if you help me find it" we declined the offer a took off to a cheering crowed of crackheads the like the rides we were rolling in, I was with some people from a local custom car club.

You're talking about Little Five Points...the Five Points area that this discussion is about is in downtown Atlanta. The area that you visited is between Candler Park and Inman Park.
