Hi I am planning to move from WI to Atlanta and want to know as to where are the good places to live for familes. I am Asian Indian and have 2 small kids.
Also wanted to know how are the job prospects in IT and how good are the prospects long term. I a vetaran of 15 years plus experience in IT but the current market was a challenge and hence the question. Also if someone has any idea about how the job market is in Dallas, TX and how it compares to Atlanta, GA...it would be a bonus.

Are places like Alpharetta, Cumming, Suwanee all good?

I understand that one can finds lots of companies just E and W of the 400 in Alpharetta and also in Norcross. Are all these places good to commute from Cumming and Suwanee also?

Is Atlanta a good place to retire and good for children's University education?

I hear the traffic is terrible in Alpharetta and Atlanta in general. But if I travel to work a little late and come a little late also is that Ok? If so what are the bad hours like to travel in and around Alpharetta?

Define what you mean by IT? Atlanta is very IT centric.

BTW any idea about propects for IT within Healthcare or for atht matter medical equipment manufacturing, Biomedical engineering, IT in heatlhcare etc types of jobs. I hear there is this huge company called Mckesson. Anything else?

There are a number of data centers in Atlanta, it would be checking them out along with registering on their various forums to push your CV to their clients, some will be more receptive than others. There is AT&T of course as well as others, Atlanta sits on top of a huge fiber infrastructure.

Gwinnett County, near the Gwinnett Place Mall, over to Johns Creek in North Fulton, and to South Forsyth (Cumming area) have heavy Asian and Indian populations. I can't believe how much those segments have grown in the last few years (thank goodness). The Atlanta market is hurting job wise, and I'd normally say don't move here without a job, but I've spoken with a number of people who have recently moved here from the west coast for IT jobs. They said they work up in the Alpharetta area, but I'm not sure where. Good luck!

Most of my friends are in IT, they are Indian, and they live in Johns Creek and work in either Norcross, Alpharetta, Dunwoody, and Duluth. Everyone is fearing for their IT jobs, but only one of my friends actually lost his job, and he ended up finding another higher paying job a few weeks later. But I don't have a feel for the overall market here.

If you are thinking about IT jobs, the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina is the best bet in addition to a few cities in TX as others mentioned. Atlanta has lost its edge in the job market among other things. Go to the link, Top 25 cities for your career - Manage Your Life on Shine (http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/life/top-25-cities-for-your-career-458275/ - broken link), and you'll find out why. Atlanta and its suburbs has lost its affordability; unemployment here is high; the infrastructure can't keep up with the massive influx of new residents coming in each year; and don't forget, the traffic is a nightmare here. Of course, if you have family who lives in GA, then there is a reason to move here, but I would advise anybody to look at other cities for new careers. Atlanta isn't worth it.
