HI, We are moving to the Atlanta area due to my husbands job next year & wondered what the best area is for us. We have 4 children, so safety & good schools, low crime, nice neighborhoods, etc. is very important to us. We would be willing to be an hour from the city if necessary. THANKS

A critical omission here is the location of your husband's job. Downtown, Southside, Northside, Eastside, Westside? It makes a big difference in terms of commuting issues.
Having said that, and considering what is important to you, I would say East Cobb.

You need to give more information such as

1) Where is your husband's work place?
2) What is your price range?
3) How old are the kids ? Middle School / High School?
4) Will you be renting initially?
5) Which would you prefer in-town or farther suburb or gentrificated locations or new & upcoming locations?

You could start with

1) Decatur, Kirkwood -> East
2) Duluth, Lawrenceville -> North East
3) Roswell, Alpharetta, John's Creek -> North
4) East Cobb , Marietta ->North West
5) Smryna ->West

I don't know much about South part of atlanta.

Good luck.

I am curious. If money was not an object, . . what suburbs/areas would be "the best" ?

If money was not a factor I would never live in the suburbs when there are great areas intown with good schools etc.

Angie,

When I lived in ATL, I had a condo in Vinings. This quaint area is tucked in between Smyrna & Buckhead. A GREAT, kid friendly area close to shopping and a plethora of restaurants. I do not have kids, but heard the schools were good in this area. It is kind of pricey...
