Where can I get real stats on the safety of a school. I'm looking for reports on drug busts, student violence, theft, etc. I know Dekalb County won't list such information on it's DCSS site. I am also looking for parental impressions of Chamblee High School in particular.

The AJC and Georgia Dept of Education both post totals for various types of infractions at the public schools. I think once a school is sufficiently unsafe they're supposed to allow transfers out.

AJC:
Atlanta Metro News*| ajc.com - School Discipline Reports
(Select DeKalb county)

Georgia:
Georgia Department of Education - Unsafe School Choice Option (USCO) (http://public.doe.k12.ga.us/aypnclb.aspx?PageReq=AboutUSCO - broken link)
(At the bottom under "Download" select a year, then DeKalb county)

And yes it is disturbing when you see felony crimes listed at elementary schools. I was thinking banned crayons with intent to distribute.

Chamblee probably has a worse school climate than say Lakeside or Dunwoody. But it is probably "safer" than most other DeKalb high schools.

In my opinion, Chamblee is not a good school is your child isn't in the magnet program. Over time, this may improve, but this has been a struggle for years and as of this past school year this is still a huge issue. The administration has tried having the magnet teachers teach non-magnet classes but that doesn't appeared to have solved the challenges.

Once a student is a sophomore, if they are a high achiever and can take AP type classes, then even if not in the magnet program, they can do ok, but still it is a different kind of high school experience.

About 50 percent of students at Chamblee High School come from across DeKalb County, so the kids sitting next to you might live 30 miles away.

A huge percentage of home owners with high school age children, in the Chamblee district, use private schools. In many cases, though, this has to do with proximity and nothing to do with Chamblee High. (In other words, the family moves off Ashford Dunwoody Road to be near Marist, it doesn't matter what the local public school is/was.)

I hope this helps.

30 miles away?

Yikes.

My sister and brother in law live in Chamblee, and when we visit.....seems like a great place.
