GSU announces central campus lawn (SLIDESHOW) - Atlanta Business Chronicle

"Georgia State University*plans to put a large lawn in the center of its downtown campus by tearing down 80-year-old Kell Hall, GSU President*Mark Becker*revealed Wednesday in his annual State of the University address."

This is pretty awesome. May I ask someone to post the pictures?

I'm disappointed by that news. Kell Hall is the oldest building of the campus and basically marks where the present campus started. GSU I believe had two other earlier locations before moving to Kell Hall which is a converted parking garage. The rampways of that building are iconic of GSU and the yearbook is its namesake. Students have been walking up and down those ramps for many decades. Not much greenspace will be gained from it.

Kell Hall may be "iconic" (indeed, I remember going to GSU as a kid in elementary school way back in the '70s and being told about the ramps) ... But it is STILL a converted parking garage! GSU has grown beyond that.

All colleges need a quad and let's not forget this is Atlanta where we tear down old buildings.

I'm conflicted. I feel like the building adds to the urban environment, but at the same time, greenspace would be nice.

I'm with you on this. Kinda torn. I think the building still has potential for renovation, but a quad would be quite attractive.

It's not so much "looking" iconic, but it is iconic in how GSU was described. When talking about GSU, one would always mention those ramps. As a classroom building, it dates back to the mid 1940s. And I believe there is a small theater like classroom where the Physics department used to be that was the original stage of the GSU Players which is oldest student run theater group in Georgia. Kell Hall just sounds crazy but you can go in for yourself to see that it really is a converted parking deck. No stairs, you walk up the ramps.

While I know students usually want the new buildings, I like the old ones as they have that connection with the past. I was even disappointed to see that small old building near 55 Park Place was torn down too. I was hoping GSU could incorporate it into the new buildings going up there. It used to have a small restaurant but I guess they went out of business. It would have been a cool pub or something for the business and law students.

It's still present on Google Maps

I was hoping GSU had tied up too much of its money in other more pressing needs than to bother with spending the money to tear down Kell Hall. Really, there are better things they could do with the money, and Kell Hall has a surprising amount of space, and all GSU will get out of is a patch of park.
