Atkanta And Detroit are the only cities that have had corruption?Which by the way Atlanta is no more corrupt than NYC,Chicago,Philadelphia,Miami,Las Vegas,etc.All are cities that had mayors other thann black that suffered corruption with mayors,concilmen/women,all going to jail on several different occasions.Don't know why those cities that are not predominately African Amer. get a pass and a convenient ignore but Atlanta(with admitted problems)at least has only sent One mayor to jail.As a matter of fact,also a white fmr Chrm of Fulton Co.(Skandalakis) went to jail too.We wont even get into state governments with the Talmadge and Maddox Families......

Atlanta is doing better now than oit ever has.I applaud Kasim Reed so far tackling the hard decisions.Atlanta looks good to me at this point.

Like it or not, it's one of the things that Atlanta is known for and is actually a big reason why Atlanta is the prosperous metro that it is now. Because it was able to transcend vehement racial strife and market itself as "the city too busy too hate," it fostered a very positive business climate, especially for the South. The rest, as they say, is history. If you don't like it, you can move to Birmingham. They took the opposite approach and you see where they are today.

Houston, Dallas, DC, Miami - they have all seen huge increases in blacks. They just didnt have the same base population that Atlanta had.

Again, some people fantasize about blacks being the one and only minority group that's growing, so they play up the black population growth. Their ultimate dream is for blacks to be the majority, so they get very excited when they see news like this, posting multiple threads and telling everybody how HUGE of a deal this is.

The reality is that Atlanta had a large black population to begin with, so its no surprise its now the 2nd largest. Keep in mind Atlanta's population in 1990 was 2.5 million and 29% black. Now it is 5.6 and 30% black. Clearly there has been just as signifigant growth for every other group as well, its just not as drastic of a change numerically speaking since there were virtually none here in 1990.

If you dont like the fact that blacks wont be the sole and dominant miniority in the new multi-racial Atlanta, move to Birmingham.

This is nothing more than your usual, divisive negativity and sour grapes when it comes to this subject matter.

I would really love to see proof of your claim that "some people fantasize about blacks being the one and only minority group that's growing, so they play up the black population growth. Their ultimate dream is for blacks to be the majority."

I seriously doubt you are able to provide ANY proof of this happening here by regular, enlightened posters.

Have you ever even BEEN to Southeastern Michigan? Do you not realize how beyond ridiculous this line of thinking is? Do you also not realize that if the City fails, it will drag you and the other suburbs down with it? Are you not aware of the flood of whites moving back into the City over the last decade?

Do you REALLY think that you are somehow separate, and not totally intertwined with the health of the City? Sorry, but this sounds like nothing more than wishful thinking.

stunningly shortsighted comparison. atlanta city government has nothing on detroit's and the ridiculous infighting that goes on [hardly] behind the scenes in their city council. i just moved back a couple years ago from 3 years there - atlanta may have quite a bit to do to get the books straightened out here but at least we're moving in the right direction, with a more-than competent leader. even through this recession, the worst we've ever seen here by far, our population continues to grow within the city limits. (after an incredible surge the first 8 years of this decade)

this place is hardly teetering on failure.

There are some things that cant be proved, and are more easily infered from observation and common sense. Try getting your head out of the sand. Multiple threads celebrating black population growth as if they are the only group growing is one example. Another is the standard response whenever people bring up Atlanta's Hispanic population - "No, Miami is where you Hispanics go - stay away from Atlanta, its all ours!" It's so obvious.

Just as I suspected, and I have NEVER witnessed anyone here seriously stating any such thing in regards to Hispanics in the Metro area. Ever.

There have been countless times where we have collectively celebrated the Hispanic and Asian growth here, across several categories. In my opinion, your paper-thin agenda has grown beyond divisive & tiresome.

Are you saying because it isn't the only one it somehow excuses such behavior? That's a pretty feble way to look at things. Just because our people are in office all is well and they can do no wrong. Hmm yeah. I've heard that before

If anything will kill atlanta it will be people ignoring issues and playing the favourites card. Im not even going to say the race card because the same is true for the metro too.. Corruption and ineptitude is tolerated because "our" people are in office. GA is so split along race religion and party lines that it is getting sad.. It was working well while the money was flowing but now that the economy is in the sewage hole, you will see the deficiencies in government show
