I think its great that people will see the bass pro. And get off the interstate and pump some money into the local economy.

Bass Pro isn't what it used to be. They're building one now or are going to build one in every city now it seems like including where I live. Their status as a tourist destination is no more.

They were building a bass pro in several cities before the economy. But there are still plenty of mid size cities who don't have one.

From the bass pro website

Continuing its retail growth with the opening of an outdoor superstore in Augusta/Richmond County, Georgia. The 100,000 square foot plus store will be the signature anchor for the Village of Riverwatch development to be located in the northeast quadrant of Riverwatch and I-20.

Bass Pro Shops retail stores are rated as top tourist destinations. Over 100 million people visit their stores annually which are 6 times more people than visit Disney World. Bass Pro Shops stores are the top tourist attractions in Maryland, North Carolina, and Missouri.

The Augusta/Richmond store will offer outdoor enthusiasts over 2 acres of shopping excitement with the area's largest selection of equipment and clothing for hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, backpacking, wildlife viewing, camping, outdoor cooking and more. A gift and nature center will also serve up a wide variety of outdoor-related items from lamps and dishes to bird feeders and furniture.

An expansive boat showroom will feature Tracker, Nitro, Taho, Mako, SunTracker and Grizzly boats built by Tracker Marine Group--the world's largest manufacturer of fishing boats. The store will include a full selection of Arctic Cat ATV's and Cub Cadet UTV's. A boat service center will also be available.

The rest of the Villages at Riverwatch is not looking too promising.. bad timing I guess. I fear the Bass Pro shops and Costco may be delayed about a year... hope both get built, but I think the rest of the Villages at Riverwatch project is going to be majorly scaled back or scrapped alltogether like the Watermark project.

A year late and a dollar short: Charleston Regional Business Journal | Charleston, SC Augusta really needs to quit copying us in Greenville.
