Downtown? Somewhere else?

I'm talking about tech industry and start-ups...

Might be relocating and opening a new division of my company in Austin. Where should I be looking in terms of potential office space?

Tech companies are spread out over town, though I know there is a cluster of tech companies in northwest Austin, north of the US 183/Loop 1 interchange. I believe there are some tech startups in the 183 corridor and a couple along Metric Blvd between 183 and Braker as well, although a little ways east of Metric the neighborhoods start to get sketchy.

There may be other areas as well. Back in the dot-com boom, I remember there was a lot of activity in west Austin (maybe along 360 or 2222?)...not sure if other tech companies have since taken that space or not. I'm not aware of a large tech presence in downtown, though there are a few companies there and some planning to build. Downtown prices are inflated relative to the rest of the city.

In short, I would consider space along 183 and/or Mopac to start, although others might be able to chime in with other (possibly better) suggestions.

I think 183, 360 or downtown might be good options, depending on how much you want to pay in rent and how much space you need. Many smallish tech companies are in office buildings off 360, but traffic is bad and the rent is high because of the hill country scenery.

Downtown would be an option too, there are some weird spaces which can be had for a reasonable price. You kind of take what you can find there.

If I were looking at the bottom line, I think it'd have to be somewhere NW along 183. Close to the workers and reasonably priced.

Absolutely spread out in every direction! Samsung and Applied Materials (and many smaller suppliers) are in the NE along Hwy 290 E, Dell in RR, AMD in the southwest, National Instruments, Convio in north Austin, start ups along MoPac, software start-ups downtown, south austin, east Austin.

Unless you need to be near a client or supplier, go for the best lease terms!

If you shade in the area between 183 and 734 (Parmer), that's where you'll find a large number of tech firms. Freescale, Paypal, Sun, Apple, Emerson, Samsung, IBM, National Instruments, 3M, Bioware are the ones I can name off the top of my head and I think Dell even has a few of their satellite offices in there...
