From reading the article, it appears that both Zilker and Barton Hills are on list of schools that might be closed. What on earth are they doing to do if both schools are closed?

Are we running out of kids or something? Not all parents want to raise their kids in the suburbs - it can be a very rich life growing up closer in. I know, I raised two that way.

Nah..we're running out of money. AISD is looking at $30-60 million shortfall.
We'll probably see the resurgence of "the portables".

Yeah I think you touched on the issue there. That is changing demographics of certain neighborhoods that result in more singles and childless couples. Maybe when the school was planned they drew it up according to census and other data about the area and came up with a reasonable size for those circumstances. I still thinks it's a great place to raise kids.

I'm sure THL would be willing to let go of her Barton Hills house for what she paid for it (adjusted for inflation), so that a couple with children could afford it. Couldn't help it.

Don't have to. People with and without kids have been leasing it at various times over the years that we haven't been living there.

And, yes, it's still a great place to raise a kid. I wouldn't be at all upset if I had a grandkid raised in that house someday.

We were looking at BH or Zilker over the past year and these schools were a major draw. I guess we'll stick to the 'burbs.

People, this is Austin Texas! Home of participatory democracy (to the extreme), there are so many steps before a school is actually closed. I haven't even begun to see the emails fly on the neighborhood list serves yet. If both schools are on the list, that just means that AISD is serious about closing one of them but even then . . . this is the beginning of the process, the first pitch of the first inning, the announcement of the teams for the big game, (pick your metaphor), not a done deal!

I had no clue about the Hutto closings so had to go look it up! Two of my facebook friends (one a teacher, the other on the school board) posted a link to info. I was relieved it wasn't my daughter's school, but even so, the 2 nearby ones will fill up the two I imagine they'll put the displaced kids in. They have a plan B to avoid a closing, but even that makes my blood boil. Having to lay off tons of teachers, cut the library staffing and a few other programs. Some parent comments said they would move their kids to RR schools or Pflugerville schools before they'd overcrowd them. Of course, that would in turn put a strain on those ISD's too. I read it's a statewide problem right now and not just a Central Texas one. I feel bad for all of them
