The Politifacts column today examined this claim: "Tom DeLay calls Travis County, home to Austin, the most liberal county in the land".

They determined that "The statement is more than wrong -- it’s ridiculous. Pants on Fire"! Travis County comes in at 57th place.

The Daily Caller, a conservative Washington-based website that touts its reporting and commentary. The site designated the nation’s 100 counties deemed most friendly to liberals based on (numerous) factors...

The No. 1 most liberal-friendly county, the Caller said, is California’s San Francisco County; followed by Montgomery County, Md., a suburb of the nation’s capital; Northern California’s Marin County; Colorado’s Boulder County; and New York County, where Obama carried 85 percent of the 2008 vote. Travis County was the 57th most liberal-friendly county.

Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Did you also see that we were even close to being the county in Texas that went the most heavily for Obama?

Yeah, it's only liberal for Texas.

Know who else lived/lives in "the most liberal county in Texas"? Karl Rove.

Anyone who claims Travis is the most liberal county in the country is either delusional or is making a false statement out of political self interest. I have lived several places that are more liberal, and I haven't lived in that many places.

Yes, wrong is correct. I guess you could say that Travis county is the most "liberal county" in the Austin metro area. (which isn't saying much). People in Austin like to ignore this fact, but Dallas County voted very close to the same percentages in the last presidential election.

Ahem...there are far more progressive counties even in Texas. Many counties in W. Texas have us beat hands down in just about any measure....from tort jury awards to support for social welfare policies to voting patterns. One example....Travis county turnout for Obama was 63%. Not bad, but....Starr and Zavala county were each 84%. Heck, Duval county was 79% for Gore when Bush carried Travis county.

There are probably a good 15 counties more liberal than Travis in Texas.

Common misconception, but no one with any political knowledge would ever confuse the democratic voting patterns in those counties with progressive/liberal ideologies. It's an entirely different thing. Google it.

If you mean liberal as an "ethos" with a somewhat consistent set of white upper-class aesthetics, maybe I'd agree with you. Probably more Prius per capita in Travis than Zavala. Probably more graduates from Brown, Bard, UT Plan II, etc... More Utne readers, and so on.

But that perspective limits progressivism to a cliche.

Yes Austin has lots of dyed in the wool liberals. Austin may even be their spiritual capital. But they're outnumbered by normal democrats, conservatives, traditionalists, etc...

But, pound for pound the folks of, say Rio Grande City are far more likely to be on board for any progressive political or economic program as Austinites.
