Agree with everyone that has said it it before if you choose to go over the speed limit and get caught its not a trap. Though I will say police do have some crazy tricks, my wife got her first ticket in her 26 years of driving when she was doing 60 in a 55 and for some reason the speed on a 4 lane road dropped to 45 for a 1/4 mile. It was not a road she was familiar with and it was dark so she missed the sign. The 45 MPH sign was right before a little place for cops to hide and they pulled her over. She actually stopped right in front of the sign making it 55pmh again.

Speaking to a few cops I am friends with they stated the stop is know as the fishing hole and is used when you are light on tickets that week/month. They couldn't believe that the cop didn't let her off with her record as normally they are looking for teens, drunks, and aggressive drivers. But she tool responsibility and is paying to fine. To me that is a trap/deceptive but not much you can do about it

Would that have been going through a small town? I've seen that kind of drop often here - it's pretty standard, you drop to 55 from 70 as you approach the town, then to 45 as you get further in, then sometimes to 40 depending on where in the town the highway goes through, then back up as you exit the town. To make it at least a challenge to hit the locals as you're barreling through their community.

nope no town, just a random slight left hand up hill turn.

Okay, that's odd. That might actually constitute a speed trap, depending on why the speed limit actually changes there.

The official reason is 3 years in a row some drunk teens crashed at almost the same spot. One father had some pull and more $$ than common sense and the county caved to the lawsuit.

So, apparently there's more than just drunkenness to make that particular spot a bit more dangerous than some other spot. Might be something that's not obvious to the casual observer - the way the road is graded, perhaps, something subtle. And it's much cheaper to adjust the speed limit to the actual conditions of the roadway, obvious to the naked eye or not, than to completely redo the road.

You said your wife had some difficulty in seeing the speed limit sign or the cops, which would also seem to indicate limited visibility. Might that have something to do with it, as well?

I know it's really easy, if you like to speed and get caught (or even if you don't get caught), to blame "speed traps", but it's usually (as are most things) a lot more complicated than that.

Austin is Travis County, but yes, Williamson County is out of control. Round Rock and Leander are in Williamson County. Austin police aren't that bad, it's just the Williamson County ones that are.

You know they don't just write tickets. Hell, they'll die for you.

You know this by personal experience, or are you just passing on the urban legend to that effect?

If you know it by personal experience, did you get a ticket and, if so, were you speeding/weaving in and out of traffic/doing whatever you go the ticket for?

Your location apparently reflects where you are coming from.

Some cops make mistakes, but don't paint with such a broad brush.

There's a reason Round Rock is one of the safest cities in America, and we like it that way.

Don't want to get busted, don't break the law.
Don't hate on all the cops, they are just doing their job.
Don't like the law, vote for somebody else to change it.
Don't like the election results, move somewhere else where your views predominate.
