Apparently there's been a Mountain Lion sighted in River Place.

Austin Local News - Austin woman watches in horror as wild cat kills her dog

Austin woman watches in horror as wild cat kills her dog
Newsroom
4/1/2011

An Austin woman watches in disbelief as a large wild cat kills and carries her dog away. It happened at sunrise in the River Place neighborhood off of 2222. Christy Cochran says when she heard the cat screech just feet from her that it was already too late and her dog was limp in the cat's mouth. Cochran says she believes it was a mountain lion. It was big enough to easily take down her 25 pound dog. Wildlife officials are reportedly tracking the cat. In the meantime River Place residents are warned to avoid walking pets at sunrise or after dark. KLBJ’s Barbara McCarley reports.

It prob is a joke given the date and that I never saw anything on the tv stations about it however the Austin area has had mountain lion(s) in the area. Google for it and you can find it. I have a place in the hill country and we have heard the mating screams..someone looking for love...

The area right behind River Place is called "Panther Hollow", so named because a mountain lion killed a herd of goats in the area when they were building the nature trails out there.

It is odd that no other news organizations picked up that story. I found one dated April 2, 2011 reporting a Mountain Lion documented in Cameron County near Harlingen. Mountain lion documented in Cameron County | lion, mountain, cameron - TheMonitor.com (http://www.themonitor.com/news/lion-48730-mountain-cameron.html - broken link)

I live over there and I have heard some loud animal howls over the past few days, but I had assumed it was like a bobcat or coyote. I admit that I am not on the up and up when it comes to distinguishing animal sounds.

It may be a prank, but there HAVE been reports of Mountain Lions in Austin before. There was one not too long ago in Brushy Creek.

From the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept.

See the map of counties where mortalities have occurred. Travis County is not one of them, yet.

Currently, sightings of
mountain lions have occurred in all 254 Texas counties.
However, not all sightings are confirmed. Mortalities provide
a more accurate reflection of where mountain lions have
lived. Mortalities have been recorded in 67 counties (see
Texas Mountain Lion Mortality Reports, 1983 to 2005).

I live in River Place, and I am friends with someone on our HOA board. This is NOT a prank or a lie. It happened.
