Austin hasn't been one of a kind since the early eighties. I thought I'd been everywhere, until I was made to move here. Hated the thought of "Texas" being my home. After the third visit, I was in love. So totally relaxed, all kinds of people in different socioeconomic status living together as one, in this special truely hip place. The word got out what a cool place it was....sorry gang...Austin is no longer weird or different. That is OVER. Jump in your luxury over priced vehicle and look at the dried up Lake Travis. It will never be what it once was, nor will Austin. If you think it's weird here, it's not the city, it's you.

Anywhere in the world?
Rome

Anywhere in North America?
Vancouver

Anywhere in US?
San Francisco, or Portland maybe. If retiring - Santa Fe perhaps.

Anywhere in Texas?
very specifically - East Dallas (Lakewood, MStreets, or Lower Greenville), Houston inside the loop (Montrose, West U, the Heights. . .), or San Antonio in King William district

If I had to leave Austin, I would go where I have family. This ends up being Albuquerque or central Wisconsin. I think I'd prefer Albuquerque. Going someplace that is beautiful and/or has lots of other attributes becomes hollow if you are of an older age and alone. Community and family is where life is.

I am sure they'll tear down this building soon to put up more $300k condos

Frankly, given that most of the condos downtown that are available for sale right now are priced at the insane range of $700k+ for a 1-bedroom (!!), myself and I'm sure a lot of others would welcome more nice 2-bedroom condos in the $300-350k range, which would be far more reasonable (AND more realistic).

Once we get more supply on the market downtown, people will start to realize how insane it is to pay $700k for a 1100 sq ft. one bedroom. As nice as Austin is, this isn't Manhattan!

Close in some of the brand new super high end buildings:

200 CONGRESS AVE, Unit 16B, Austin, TX 78701 (MLS # 5170306)

210 Lavaca ST, Unit 3003, Austin, TX 78701 (MLS # 2166189)

But you can also find some much cheaper as well.
