How much is your permit to put in a hot water heater? Ours went kaput and I was flabbergasted to see Hutto and Brushy Creek charge $100 for the permit! They were the highest in this area. I think it's highway robbery!

In Austin, I don't think I paid a permit fee, but it might have been included in the price I paid to the installer. The COA did come out and do an inspection afterward, but no fee at that time.

Yes, it is included with the installation as the person doing the work has to go and pick up the permit from city hall. I don't know if they itemized it on your bill or not though.

I didn't know you had to have a permit for that. It's good to know, however, since ours hasn't died on us yet.

If this form is up to date, it looks like it is $34.50.

Since they actually did come out an inspect the water heater, I guess that is not a bad deal at all.

I don't understand how Hutto can justify 100 bucks. Guess I need to find out. Thanks for your replies on how much it cost. You gotta deal!

That's crazy. I replaced mine myself (electric), and didn't even imagine a permit was required. Travis County, no city.

If you are in the county, then no permit was likely required. WH codes change quite frequently, it seems, inside the city limits. There is now some kind of expansion tank (Water Heater Expansion Tank Installation: What to Know) required to be included as part of the WH, and there is also some kind of new valve that may be required to be added in older home's water systems. Most of the contractors know these requirements quite well, but I am guessing the COA inspections keep contractors from low-balling the bids by leaving out required (by relatively 'esoteric') components of the system.

welcome to the water heater racket- i have 9 estimates ranging from 1050$ to 2011$ for a 50gallon gas 6 year heater
install in the garage. these guys are on commission and are like used car salesman. Its confusing and thats the way
they like it. Everyone has their hand out for a job that should cost about 300$ for the heater and about 400$ for the
install. Welcome to Austin!

There are a lot of companies that do straight-pricing on water heaters and install jobs. I know ABC is on commission, and the guy that came out to do the bid told me that they were always the highest. Go figure. Anyway, the cost of the water heater (plus expansion tank) is relatively fixed, the permit cost is fixed, and the only real variable costs are the labor and any markups. Easy to compare and it IS a competitive business.
