Does anyone have Virgin Mobile as a cell provider? I am getting ready to switch providers, but I want to make sure that the company I switch to has decent service around here.

I'm in far West Austin (Steiner Ranch). Most providers seem to be OK, but I had tons of problems getting reception with T-Mobile.

I had Virgin Mobile when I first moved here a couple years ago and never had any problems. Although I was never out that far to Steiner with it.

I believe they use Sprint's towers?

Yes, they use Sprint towers, but they don't roam. So if you aren't near a Sprint tower, you basically won't have service. I actually have Sprint now and have not had reception issues, but I'm not sure if I'm actually roaming some of the time, if that makes sense.

I have had Virgin mobile for several years and have traveled around Texas a lot and the country some without too much of a problem with roaming. I have found the Sprint coverage map to be pretty accurate assuming that "Signal strength varies" means difficult to pick up a signal. There are a few spots along West I-10 where I don't get coverage, but it has been a huge improvement over T-mobile (which I dropped for Virgin).

Good to hear - I'm planning on doing the same (drop Tmobile for Virgin) here in the very new future. Seems like a no-brainer to do so once you really look into the pricing of it all.

I switched from Verizon to Virgin Mobile and I was skeptical because of the price difference. I think the service is great. I love having a much lower bill. I'm happy with their customer service as well. (Imagine that) I'd say that when I use maps or go online it's pretty slow, but it might be b/c I have an older phone.

Take a look at page plus, they use the verizon towers and have some decent prepaid plans.

We flashed our verizon phones to page plus, and use them instead.

Up north of Austin, I have only had good luck with Verizon and ATT.

I have not had the Sprint network out here, but I have had Tmobile and they were very poor all over Austin.

The final straw was when I was sitting in the Moody theater trying to call a friend to tell her where I was, and I had zero bars on Tmobile.

I live in Round Rock, and have not had trouble with Virgin Mobile for making telephone calls and texting. Data is very slow, but data has been slow on Virgin Mobile for me everywhere, even in downtown Austin, Chicago, and San Diego. That said, I don't have a point of comparison; it's the first data plan I've had.
