We're excited to be moving to Austin in January from Boston and I'll be on the faculty at UT. Starting to narrow down neighborhood possibilities and after reading many many posts on here, Lakeway is one strong possibility. We have 4 young children and are sailors-- so the combination of strong schools and easy access to Austin yacht club makes the area attractive. I did the commute one time in rush hour and it was about 45 min. For regular commuters, does this seem typical and should I expect that it will worsen in the coming years?

Many thanks!

I think it will get worse and I think the drive will wear on you over the long term. You could consider something near 2222 which would be a nice half-way point.

Personally, if you are coming from Boston proper, you'd probably feel less isolated living in Austin. Almost all the ut profs I know live in central or south Austin, if that matters to you. Second 2222 as a good midway point. With 4 kids and a busy job, you'll prob only have time to boat on the weekends and if you live around 2222 or similar you'll be closer to ut and all the cultural amenities downtown has to offer but close to the water for the weekends

Agreed. Unless you will only be going in 2 or 3 times a week.

I'd also add SW Austin to the list of possibilities. Just 15 miles from the lake, 20 minutes to UT (30+ in traffic), good schools.

Many thanks! I'll do some more checking around the 222 and SW areas. I was thinking about the kids getting out to youth sailing practices after school but it looks like that might be just one weekday per week.

Central Austin would certainly be very similar to our current lifestyle (walkable to everything, strong neighborhood feeling, local shops/restaurants) but I'm just not seeing 3-4BR housing that's affordable for us.

There are so many great options in the area-- it's exciting and just a bit overwhelming.
