Howdy,

I am lesbian and looking to move to Austin with my partner. We have hopes of having kids soon as well. Where should we live? We are looking for safety, accepting of gays, within 15 minutes of downtown and airport, under 400k, new build from ground up, be around a lot of activity and sizeable back yard. I assume I will be working downtown since I work at law firms so I do not want to be in 1 hour traffic to and from work every day? Does Austin have park and rides for trains or anything? My partner will spend a lot of time at the airport to travel for her job. Please help!

Sincerely,

Cheralyn

Hi,

Since you are new, you should review the Terms of Service at the top of the page in each forum. This is a helpful excerpt from that TOS document:

Please use the Search this Forum tool to find info you need, as much has already been written about schools, jobs, weather, crime, prices, rentals, walkability and other aspects of a location. If you don't find it, please sign in and ask your questions. New users should use the Search this Forum tool before posting a question that may have already been answered. Let us know that you have searched the forums, so we don't assume otherwise.

When asking questions about a location, give as much detail as you can, so we can zero in on the info you need. If house hunting, what is your price level or rental amount. How many BR's, Baths, square feet, lot size, etc, do you need? Pets? SFH, TH, Condo, mobile home? In-town, rural, college town, military town, mountains? Schools for children? Gated community, golf course community, active senior community? Do you need to stable a horse? Is there an RV or boat trailer to consider? The more you tell us, the sooner our regular posters can reply with specificity. Same for any other criteria you have. Please avoid open-ended requests like "I'm moving to your city, tell me EVERYTHING I need to know."

Good luck!

Anyone that starts a post with "Howdy" should get a friendly welcome here.

I think there are a few challenges in the OPs search. 1) is the 15 minutes to both downtown and the airport. I have been on the UT campus at rush hour and getting to the airport was painful. 2) is new construction. I don't know east Austin well, but others here do. Perhaps there are lots or areas where new construction is happening in that area. The budget seems adequate.

Acceptance should not be a problem.

Thanks for the information. I did some searching, however it seemed to be older and those communities were built out now.

My posting does give the information that you mentioned. "We are looking for safety, accepting of gays, within 15 minutes of downtown and airport, under 400k, new build from ground up, be around a lot of activity and sizeable back yard."

I didn't want to make the post too long. :-)

Have a great day.

Cheralyn

Thanks so much! :-)

I am just being a brat with the 15 minute thing. I can go up to 30, but I don't think much more than that. I have heard the Circle C, Congress and Lakeway may be good options, but I have read that Lakeway has horrible traffic.

Thanks again,

Cheralyn

Lakeway (or too far west in general) would be a really bad choice if you're driving downtown or to the airport a lot. Finding a central new build will be tough, but have you considered remodeling or finding a home that has been recently remodeled? The Mueller development might also be a good choice for you (new homes/ close to downtown). Rumor is that they want to connect a rail system from Mueller to downtown.

You might also find this thread helpful.

If you can give up on the vision of a large yard - consider Mueller which is:

>15Mins from downtown and airport
Has some homes starting in the 300s
New build from ground up
In east side and increasingly hip area of Austin
Soon to have a town center which could be pretty cool

No yards to speak up (certainly nothing under 400K) but plenty of parks and greenspace right at your doorstep.

And there are LOTS of lesbians - you'll be right at home

Circle C is 30-45 (or worse) in traffic. Lakeway is helluv far from downtown or airport.

Thank you for all of the responses so far. I am curious if I could park my car somewhere and ride a train that won't be in traffic downtown which could make the commute better?

Thanks,

Cheralyn

Not anywhere that would be close to the airport.
