So for a while now Austin, TX has been one of the cities I've been considering moving to. I was reading that Austin is the fastest growing big city in all of America...Austin, TX - In Photos: America's 20 Fastest Growing Cities - Forbes. It grew by 50,000 people just in the past year and also has one the best job markets around right now. I was just now going on Google Maps streetview and it looks like Austin is a beautiful area. You have the city proper and also have country roads, rivers, parks, lakes, hills. About me - I'm in my mid-30's, single male, from Southern California, am in the construction industry. I've been to Texas before, San Antonio, but that was a week-long vacation visit almost 9 years ago. So I was wondering where in the Austin area is it best to live?

If you're working construction, north or south would be the best bet.

It all depends on your budget, lifestyle, interests and work location. There is no "one size fits all" answer.

Definitely. I've always liked west Austin mostly for the hills, trees and views. That could include Northwest and Southwest too. But it's expensive, and not walkable at all. You have to drive anywhere for entertainment. Downtown, East Austin, South Austin, all are better for that type of stuff. East and South have some nice city views, even though they aren't in downtown.

If I had my druthers, I'd choose one of the substantial well-built older homes in the Northwest Hills/Murchison School area, which doesn't really fit any of the choices in this poll.

You forgot SW Austin. South Austin and SW Austin are two different birds.

South and SW Austin will pretty much blend together demographically over the next 15 years.

I do find this poll a little misdirected though. Everyone is going to vote for their own part of town, and half the choices aren't actually Austin.

The question should be: If you were to live in another part of town besides your's, where would it be? The correct answer would be downtown, Hyde Park, Soco or West Austin. That's were 90% of the people in this town would live, if money was no object.

The simpliest, most objective way to answer this question is to ask where the most expensive parts of town are. The free market has already voted for the best part of town with their dollars. Go to the city-data website, and start plugging in zipcodes, you can see sales prices and trends. Of the top 10 priceiest zip codes, 8 are south of the river. West, SW and South are expensive. NW hugging the river's north bank is expensive.

Wimberley, River Hills, Westlake, Circle C and Barton Creek are pricey.

Guess that leaves plenty for us in the 10% to choose from. Soco? To live? Great place to visit...

Yeah, there may be a lot in that 10%. I have nothing against those areas, but not where I want to live right now (have lived there in the past, though ). I guess it depends on whether money AND commute are no object, as well......
