It appears that in the past two years there is white organisms (I think they are fungus) on one my trees.

it seems like the tree is trying to shed it's external layer.

I only see evidence of this on the lower five feet of the tree. the tree seems otherwise green and quite normal on the upper branches.

I have an uneducated guess that this is sort of a cranker. but really not certain at all.

any advice would be appreciated. I live in Jollyville area.

You should probably call a certified arborist.

You should for sure call a certified arborist. I am not competent to identify the problem, but that is not healthy bark. You need to get it treated before you lose the tree. Our local trees have been very stressed from the drought, and are more open to diseases than they would normally be.

Definitely call an arborist to save your trees. We use Jeff Heater at Green Tree and Shrub Green Tree and Shrub Care and have been VERY pleased! Not only has he taken care of a fungus that was threatening our red oak, but he's also done deep root fertilization on our new trees and as a result, they have really sprouted out.

Looks like canker to me too. You need an arborist to look at it, but don't be surprised if they tell you there is no treatment other than to wait and see.
