I'm moving to Austin in the summer due to a job offer. I've been reading a lot on the forums and mostly see problems with traffic. Are there any areas I should avoid due to traffic or crime.

I am approved for a home purchase for $190,000 and need to know some neighborhoods to start searching in. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am willing to live in an outlying town : Round Rock, Pflugerville, or Cedar Park if anyone knows any good neighborhoods in Austin or the surrounding towns.

Also, are there any good places to shop/eat in the outlying areas or is everything mostly located within Austin?

Thanks so much!

Were you here at all during the interim? Things are changing(growing) rapidly...to say the least

Thanks for the link to the thread. I wasn't able to move back in '08 due to a family matter. However, I have always wanted to move to Austin and now am finally able to. I figured things had changed a lot since I last looked years ago. I will look through the thread. Thanks much!

There are tons of places to eat not inside of austin. In fact, it's hard to tell where Austin ends and pflugerville/cedar park, etc...begin

You are right to be concerned about traffic. Giving us a little more info on your location will help. Please know that the real estate market here is a bit crazy so finding something to buy, especially from a distance, will be hard. Have you considered renting for awhile to get your bearings and decide where you really want to be? All of the burbs you mentioned are fine - they are directly connected to Austin and have lots of options for eating and shopping in their own areas. As far as a home purchase is concerned, are you looking for a single family home or are you open to townhomes or condos? That will open up your options. Under $200K is pretty near impossible in Austin, but the other locations you mentioned are possible. Do you have any plans to make a visit before your move?

It's good that you are willing to live in an outlying town. Because 190K will not get you anything in Austin (Maybe something horrible in Dove Springs or Rundberg, but I wouldn't advise it).

But you should know what it entails up front: All the areas you listed will have horrendous traffic into Austin. All of them. And, the very best day will be the day you move in. Each day after that will suck just a little be more (and potentially a lot more, in the case of Mopac, for the next several years).

Isolated pockets - but the action is in central Austin. of course, we've made that unaffordable for almost everyone. Sucks.

Completely false.

190 will get you into non-Rundberg NACA, Gracywoods, Lamplight, or the austin-ETJ area in wells branch.

that's just on the north where I'm familiar, I'm sure there's other stuff on the S/E/W.

The poster stated that they will be working in North Austin. Depending on the exact location, any of those areas may have minimal traffic.
