BS. You live in central Austin. What you know about Williamson county could fill a thimble. You are dealing in stereotypes and presumptions that X political preferences translates into X personal behavior. Just because someone favors limited government doesn't mean they hate gays.

Yes. And if this attitude were directed towards, oh, I don't know, let's say gays, know what it would be called, and likely by A-Tex?

Just because the target changes doesn't change the attitude one whit.

Former Austinite here, you'll fit right in. Very, very tolerant. It's hot as hell though.

Ah! How convenient? You talk as though you know everything about him/her - it seems you are the one guilty of stereotyping here. Can't you respect the opinion of someone who doesn't share your politics?

Don't let the truth get in the way, there buddy. A-Tex lives in central Austin, yet feels totally qualified to pass judgement on people that live miles away - to decide that their votes for limited government means they hate gays. It is the worst type of slander, and one that has become so common as to be accepted unquestioningly. So no, I don't respect that opinion, just as I don't respect any other bias or stereotype. Doesn't have anything to do with sharing my politics - has everything to do with rejecting prejudice - of all types.

scm, you hit the nail on the head. I actually reside in one of the smaller towns in Williamson County, and have lived here for 8 years now. I've lived in near rural areas of the Texas Gulf Coast and in Houston and Denver. In Houston and in Denver, I lived right on the edge of downtown. Our daughter was born in Denver and so she's been brought up in a city environment as well as suburban. I was a hardcore liberal until I was about 25. I have some aspects of my political personality that are socially liberal and some conservative. I tend to vote republican, but if a candidate of another party seems a better fit, I'll vote for them. I also understand some about gay acceptance. One of my favorite cousins is a lesbian. When she first came out, she distanced herself from some family members because she was afraid of not being accepted by them. As the years have passed and she realizes that we all love her no matter what, she's been way more visible.

So to paint everyone in Williamson County as unaccepting is just ridiculous. Especially if you don't have any experience with people there. Just basing your opinions on what a blue/red map shows or what comes through the grapevine is just silly. There are so many people out here from all over anymore that you just can't lump people into a general clump, there are too many nuances. There are lots of immigrants from many countries out here, city dwellers who decided to go rural or suburban, mixed race couples, gay couples, atheists, Christians, wiccans, etc....

Lest anyone thinks I'm not being fair, the road goes both ways. There are tons of reasons City life is alluring. I know because I've done it.

Houston is very Gary friendly as well. Much bigger gay population due to the size but I think you'd be fine in Austin, Dallas or Houston.

We are a gay couple from Southern California. My husband and I have been together for many years and have three children. We are thinking about moving to Austin as we have heard from a few people that it's a fantastic place to live. How do you feel we would be received? Is there a big gay scene? Are there many gay families? What is the overall consensus of legalizing gay marriage in Texas?

Any and all honest input would be greatly appreciated.
The challenge is that what is destroying california is liberal policies. You want to come probably because our economy is better (certainly not for the weather or for amenities).

If you do come, try to understand how fiscal conservatism actually makes for a much better long term economic environment.

What we all worry about is liberal californians who have basically destroyed the state, moving to places with great economies, then destroying those places all over again.

If i was going to stir the pot I would have posted a far more controversial post than I'm gay and have a family to take care of.

Stereotyping much?
