The Austin Tea Party and a millionaire roads maintenance contractor are behind the campaign against Proposition 1
Completely willing to invoke the reliable Pavlovian response among "progressives" by invoking two reliable red herrings. The opposition goes well past that - multiple neighborhood associations, the overwhelming majority of council candidates, and the pro- transit, anti-Prop 1 Austinites for Urban Rail Action.

Shameful.

Ha, what a joke. Response to the points:

1. fundamental character of Austin? What would that be? Whatever it is Austin has already been changing for quite some time. What a worthless "point" as point 1.

2. Prop 1 is a first step? A mighty expensive first step that serves very few and will not operate to achieve the results claimed. Future phases? In other words, give us ours now and you can wait for yours.

3. "If Prop 1 fails those state and federal funds will go to support mass transit in other cities and states." Can you say 'rail envy'? If Prop 1 fails the taxpayers also won't be saddled with a rail tax for the benefit of a very few.

4. "Traffic congestion .... promoting sprawl growth". Which comes first, congestion or "sprawl"? First this "solution" isn't going to reduce any congestion. Second, it isn't going to alter what is derided as "sprawl". It might increase development along the path of the rail which would lead to more congestion.

5. "Traffic congestion makes living in Austin less affordable..." Huh? This makes no sense. Something might be said for the converse: The lack of affordable living in Austin increases traffic congestion. There are plenty of folks that could afford to live in Austin that don't want to either. Of course adding a rail tax does not improve "affordability".

6. "Capital Metro's Red Line has increased ridership by over 400% since launching in 2010." When you start out with zero as the denominator you can claim infinite growth. In the end, how much reduction in traffic did it garner?

7. "Prop. 1 invests in roads too." Sure it does. It invests in modifying roads to accommodate rail. Is reducing lane count considered "investing" in roads?

8. What scm53 said. Truly pitiful marketing ploy.

Tomorrow is the first day of early voting. Wonder how many people will vote against this before election day arrives?

This is one of the biggest scams. The rail people know that we need roads a lot more than rail. They also know the tax payers would prefer that their money go to roads rather than rail. So they do the "happy meal" trick. Bundle road money with rail to entice voters. Unfortunately, that road money will not help and the net result will be more traffic congestion.

Prop 1 is going to fail badly. It's unpopular, but if we toll every highway possible, and create walkable neighborhoods (like 78701) then we wouldn't be in this situation.

Those neighborhood associations aren't making anti-Prop 1 media buys, nor are the council candidates (they're busy with their own campaigns.

I'm pretty sure Aura is low budget as well. If you follow the money, it's the sources listed. That's not a red herring, it's a simple fact.

Yes, it does. Transportation is one of the main factors of affordability.

On average, a car costs (purchase, upkeep, fuel, insurance) $10k per year. Anyone who is enabled to go car-free, or a couple that can go from 2 cars to 1, sees that savings. That's a _huge_ increase in affordability.
